Node-API (N-API) and V8 `.node` addons depend on Node.js itself, so compiled programs can't load them. Direct `createRequire` calls to local addons are rejected at compile time. A package that requires an addon needs a JavaScript implementation that compiles, or a replacement through native FFI. A package that looks for an optional addon at run time compiles with `--npm-static`. In JavaScript dependencies, a `createRequire` require call with a computed specifier, and `require.resolve` called with a computed request or read as a value, resolve the specifier with the Node.js algorithm when the program runs. `require.resolve` returns the path Node.js returns. When nothing resolves, both throw the `MODULE_NOT_FOUND` error that Node.js throws, so a package that probes for a missing addon takes the same branch as in Node.js. When the specifier of a require call resolves to a native addon, a builtin, or a file that is not part of the compiled program, the program prints an SC2020 error that names it and exits with status 1, because Node.js would load that module. A `catch` clause around the call does not run in that case. Resolution steps that the runtime does not reproduce, such as package `imports` specifiers, `require.resolve` options, and subpaths that a package does not export, end the program the same way. Coverage lists these calls as deferred to runtime. Other computed uses compile when they are inside a `try` block: a require call with spread arguments, a `require.resolve` call with another argument count, and `require.resolve.paths` called with a computed request evaluate their arguments and then throw an error, and `require.resolve.paths` read as a value is a function that throws when called. Coverage lists these as deferred to runtime as well, and the package's `catch` clause then runs as it does in Node.js when the addon is missing. Outside a `try` block, these uses keep the package refused. This applies until compiled programs can load addons through Node.js. Use [Native FFI](/docs/ffi#replacing-a-node-api-addon) to call a plain C ABI function linked from an object or static archive. The guide includes a replacement for a small Node-API helper.
