After `socket.setEncoding("utf8")`, an inline `'data'` listener receives strings, as in Node, whatever type its chunk parameter declares. A listener passed by reference, such as a named function whose parameter is typed `Buffer`, keeps its `Buffer` parameter, so a string chunk throws `TypeError: expected Uint8Array at $[0], got string`. Declare that parameter as `string` or `string | Buffer`, or pass an inline function.
