feat(auth): emit OCSF events for credential-less gateway requests (#4632)
Requests the gateway rejects before consulting any authenticator now emit an OCSF Authentication [3002] event: no credential presented, mTLS required without a client certificate, or an operator certificate combined with an authorization header. Each event carries a reason category in status_detail and never the presented credential. The response returned to the caller is unchanged. openshell-ocsf gains the Authentication class with user and service objects, and a shared OcsfCapture test layer. Schema validation now rejects attributes the class does not define and profile attributes whose profile the event does not declare. Refs #2912 Signed-off-by: Kris Hicks <khicks@nvidia.com> |

feat(server): export gateway OCSF events as OTLP log records (#4500)
The gateway only persisted its OCSF events to the JSONL file, so collectors had to tail that file. Adding `[openshell.gateway.otlp.ocsf]` now also exports each gateway OCSF event as an OTLP log record, using the same resource identity as gateway traces. `schema_version` optionally downgrades the exported JSON to OCSF 1.1 or 1.3. OTLP endpoints are now configured per signal, so OCSF events can go to a collector that feeds a SIEM while spans go elsewhere. The existing `[openshell.gateway.otlp]` `endpoint` is the default for every signal and on its own still enables trace export. `[otlp.traces]` overrides the trace endpoint, and `[otlp.ocsf]` takes its own `endpoint` or falls back to the default. Each record carries the OCSF JSON as its body, the event time as its timestamp, a severity mapped from `severity_id`, and `ocsf.*` and `openshell.sandbox.id` attributes for filtering without parsing the body. Records flow through a queue bounded by count and bytes to the SDK OTLP log exporter in batches bounded the same way. Failed exports retry with backoff; records lost to a full queue, an oversized body, or exhausted retries are counted in metrics and reported to the collector in an `openshell.ocsf.gap` record on the next successful export. The exporter lives in `openshell-otel` so other processes can share it. Helm deployments set the `traces` and `ocsf` tables through `gatewayConfig`, and the local development gateway tasks enable OCSF export. refactor(providers)!: make provider profiles import-only (#3383)
* chore(providers): remove dead provider plugin modules Twelve modules under crates/openshell-providers/src/providers/ were never declared in providers/mod.rs, so they have not been compiled since the plugin registry was narrowed to the two adapters it still registers. Four of them (generic, gitlab, opencode, outlook) key off provider type identifiers that normalize_provider_type already retired. Keep google_cloud and vertex, which are the only plugins ProviderRegistry::new registers. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * test(providers): load example profiles from providers/ at test time Add an example_profiles module that reads the YAML under providers/ from the source checkout at run time and parses it with the existing profile loader. It is gated behind a new non-default example-profiles feature so it is available to this crate's own tests and, once wired into dev-dependencies, to gateway and CLI tests, while never reaching a release binary. Nothing consumes it yet; later changes move the test fixtures off the compiled catalog and onto these files. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * test: source profile fixtures from providers/ instead of the compiled catalog Unit and integration fixtures reached into builtin_profiles() to get a profile to work with, which ties the tests to the compiled catalog rather than to the files an operator would import. Point them at the example_profiles loader instead. The profiles.rs tests keep their coverage unchanged and become explicit golden tests over providers/*.yaml: they are what keeps those files valid once nothing compiles them. builtin_profiles_are_sorted_by_id widens into a test that the whole example set parses, sorts, and lints clean as one catalog. The CLI fake gateways serve the example profiles the way a real gateway serves what an operator imported, through a shared helper. No behavior change: the gateway still loads the built-in source by default and serves the same profiles. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * docs(providers): document the example provider profiles Each file under providers/ now opens with a header naming its expected client binary identities, the image layout those paths assume, the credential scope, the endpoint access it grants, and a smoke test. Add a README covering the import commands and why a profile should be copied and edited rather than imported unchanged. Several of these profiles bind network access to paths that only exist in the OpenShell Community image — /sandbox/.venv, /app/.venv, /sandbox/.cursor-server, /usr/lib/node_modules. Imported unchanged into another image the profile matches nothing: the catalog still advertises it, but the credential is never injected and the traffic is denied. The headers say so where it applies. Comments only; the profile schema has no documentation fields and all fifteen files still lint clean. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * test(server): seed unit-test state with the example provider profiles Server unit tests inherited the builtin + user source default from ServerState, so around a hundred and forty assertions about github, openai and the rest resolved against the compiled catalog. Point the test state at the user source alone and import the example profiles from providers/ into its store first, the way an operator would. Every one of those assertions keeps passing unchanged, which is the point: it proves the gateway behaves identically with an imported catalog before the default moves. Four tests asserted builtin-source semantics specifically. Under import-only the only profiles a gateway cannot edit are the ones a non-user source vends, so they now exercise a source-managed profile composed with the user source; the read-only guard they cover is the one that still applies to interceptor catalogs. The list test asserts the imported profile's user/platform identity instead of builtin with an empty scope. test_server_state_with_user_only_github_profile is gone: the default test state now is a user-only gateway with github imported. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * refactor(cli): resolve credential suggestions from the gateway catalog The --env credential warning scanned a profile table compiled into the CLI, so its suggestions described the binary rather than the gateway the user is talking to: a profile the gateway does not serve was suggested anyway, and an imported custom profile never was. Fetch the catalog from the connected gateway instead. The warning moves out of argument parsing and into sandbox create and sandbox template create, where a client already exists. A catalog fetch failure is not fatal — the warning degrades to its generic form rather than blocking sandbox creation. Extract the ListProviderProfiles paging loop from provider list-profiles into a shared fetch_provider_profile_catalog, which the profile-driven paths now share. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * refactor(cli)!: infer providers from the gateway catalog Command-to-provider inference went through a hardcoded alias table in openshell-providers, a second copy of the built-in catalog's identifiers. A custom profile could never be inferred no matter what binaries it declared, and the table drifted from the profiles it mirrored. Infer from the connected gateway's catalog instead: match the command's basename against each profile's ID and against the basenames of the binaries the profile authorizes. A profile that names /usr/bin/claude is the profile for running claude. The match must be unique — where several profiles claim a command, the user names one with --provider — and an empty catalog infers nothing. No command is special-cased. `binaries` is the operator's authorization statement, so a profile that declares a binary claims the command that runs it, whatever that binary is; narrowing that belongs in the profile rather than in a list compiled into the CLI, which could never cover an unbounded catalog anyway. Breaking: the retired aliases stop resolving, and commands the old table never listed can now infer. git, pip and uv are declared by the github and pypi example profiles, so they infer where they previously did not. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * refactor(providers, server)!: resolve provider profiles by exact ID normalize_provider_type was a hardcoded alias map — gh to github, claude to claude-code, vertex to google-vertex-ai — and a second copy of the built-in catalog's identifiers, independent of the YAML it mirrored. It let a provider type resolve to a profile the operator never named, and it made the built-in IDs behave as a reserved namespace. Remove it, along with detect_provider_from_command and the alias-normalizing ProviderRegistry::inject_env. A provider type now names a profile exactly: - the effective catalog resolves an ID or reports it absent, with no alias retry - plugins activate only for the ID of a profile the gateway resolved; a provider with no resolvable profile gets no plugin projection, instead of falling back to an alias guess - the CLI surfaces the gateway's not-found instead of retrying under an alias - telemetry buckets by profile ID, and the gitlab, opencode and outlook buckets go with the aliases that were their only source Breaking: `--type gh`, `--type claude` and the other aliases no longer resolve. Use the profile's own ID. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * feat(server): fail closed when a provider's profile is absent A sandbox composed from a provider whose profile the gateway cannot resolve started anyway: the credential and policy builders warned and skipped, so the sandbox came up carrying none of that provider's credentials or network policy. The operator learned about it later, as a denied connection or a missing environment variable, rather than as the configuration error it is. Check at the two composition boundaries — CreateSandbox and AttachSandboxProvider — right beside the catalog snapshot already taken there, and reject with a bounded diagnostic naming the provider, the profile it refers to, and the import command that supplies it. Scope-aware: a platform-scoped provider is told to import with --global. Read paths are untouched. ListProviders, GetProvider and profile export keep working so an operator can see and recover an affected provider, and the shared policy builders keep their warn-and-skip for the diagnostic paths that also reach them. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * refactor(server): scope the vendor base-URL pin to declared endpoints provider_profile_endpoints_are_active withheld a credential and the provider's policy layer when an openai or anthropic provider pointed its client somewhere other than the public vendor endpoint. The guard was keyed on profile.source == "builtin" and on those two profile IDs, so it protected only profiles OpenShell shipped. Once profiles are import-only no profile is ever builtin, and the guard would silently stop applying — including to an operator who imported providers/openai.yaml verbatim. Key it on the profile instead of on where the profile came from. A profile's endpoints are the boundary its credential is bound to, so if the provider configures a *_BASE_URL pointing at a host the profile does not declare, the profile no longer describes where that credential goes and is treated as endpointless. Host matching reuses the DNS-label-aware matcher in openshell-core, so wildcard endpoints such as Vertex's *-aiplatform.googleapis.com resolve correctly. A profile with no declared endpoints has no boundary to contradict, and a config value that names no host is not a redirect this can reason about. Both keep the profile active. The control now covers every endpoint-bearing profile, including an operator's own, and the last "builtin" string leaves the gateway. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * test(e2e): import example provider profiles during gateway bring-up The e2e suites create providers from github, openai, nvidia, claude-code and google-cloud, and the GitHub lane runs a real git clone through the profile's binary attribution. A gateway serves only the profiles an operator imported, so the lanes have to import them. Add e2e_import_example_provider_profiles to the shared bring-up helpers and call it from the Docker, Podman, Kubernetes and VM wrappers once the gateway is healthy and registered. It runs the same command the upgrade notes give operators, against the repository's own providers/ directory, so the lanes exercise the documented path rather than a test-only shortcut. Lands before the default changes: a same-ID user profile already shadows a built-in, so importing works today. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * refactor(providers)!: make provider profiles import-only OpenShell compiled fifteen provider profile YAML files into every release binary and selected them by default, so a fresh gateway published a catalog it was never configured with. Those profiles are not image-neutral: their binary selectors name paths that exist in the OpenShell Community image, so changing the sandbox image could make a profile inert while the catalog still advertised it. Every endpoint, credential name and binary path in providers/ was also effectively part of the 0.1.0 public contract. A gateway's catalog is now exactly what an operator imported: - providers/*.yaml is no longer include_str!'d, and builtin_profiles() is gone from the openshell-providers API - the default provider_profile_sources is [{ type = "user" }], and a gateway with nothing imported reaches ready and serves an empty catalog — an empty catalog is a valid state, not a startup failure - the builtin source type is removed from the configuration schema, and a gateway.toml that still names it is rejected at parse time with the import command rather than an unknown-variant error - nothing reserves the canonical identifiers any more, so github, pypi, anthropic and the rest import at their own IDs and the imported profile is the only definition for that ID; the static_fallback that kept a shipped definition resident behind an imported one is gone with the source that produced it A collision between an interceptor-vended profile and an imported one still fails closed, which is the behavior that shadowing quietly bypassed for built-ins. Operators upgrading should export the profiles their deployment relies on before upgrading, or copy them from the providers/ directory of the matching release tag, then import them at the scope their providers use. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * docs(providers): document import-only provider profiles Rewrite the provider profile documentation around a catalog the operator builds rather than one the gateway ships. - gateway-config: the default is [{ type = "user" }], the builtin source type is gone and rejected at startup, and an empty catalog is a valid ready state - profiles: replace the built-in profile table and its shadowing semantics with the import workflow, and say plainly that a profile whose binary paths do not match the image is inert - manage-providers: replace the two fixed provider-type tables with `provider list-profiles`, and describe catalog-driven command inference - inference-routing: drop the "still loads built-in profiles for compatibility" transition text; its migration walkthrough is now the normal path - quickstart and the Docker Compose, GitHub, AWS, Google Cloud and Vertex tutorials: import the profile before creating the provider, since nothing resolves without it - release notes: a 0.1.0 migration section covering export-before-upgrade, importing from the release tag's providers/ directory, what happens to a provider whose profile is missing, and the removal of the legacy type aliases - README, architecture, the openshell-cli and debug-openshell-cluster skills, and the governance interceptor example follow the same change; the example's smoke assertion now imports a profile to prove an authoritative interceptor hides it Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(cli,e2e): distinguish catalog failures and authenticate OIDC seeding Addresses two findings from review (GATOR-c1bd9867-02 and -03). The provider profile catalog lookup collapsed its error into an empty catalog, so an authorization, availability or transport failure on ListProviderProfiles was indistinguishable from a gateway that genuinely has no profiles. Command inference then resolved nothing and the sandbox was created without the provider it needed, deferring the failure to the workload. Keep the lookup's outcome instead of discarding it. The credential warning is advisory and still degrades to its generic form, but inference now consults the catalog only when there is a command to resolve and surfaces the lookup failure when there is, naming the gateway and pointing at explicit --provider selection. Two regression tests cover it through a fake gateway whose ListProviderProfiles returns UNAVAILABLE while every other RPC succeeds: sandbox creation fails without sending a provider-less create request, and a sandbox with no trailing command still succeeds because it needs no catalog. The e2e profile seeding also ran unauthenticated in the OIDC lanes. Those lanes deliberately skip gateway registration and start the gateway without a TLS client CA, so no mTLS identity exists and no token has been acquired when the import runs; the wrapper exited during setup. Skipping the import is not sufficient because the provider tests now require the claude-code profile. Add e2e_register_oidc_admin_session, which mints an administrator token with Keycloak's password grant — the same grant the OIDC test helpers use — and writes the gateway metadata and token bundle that an interactive login would have stored, so the import runs as an authenticated administrator. The mTLS lanes keep the direct import unchanged. Both affected wrappers are covered: with-podman-gateway.sh had the same defect as with-docker-gateway.sh. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * refactor(cli)!: remove command-derived provider attachment Addresses GATOR-c1bd9867-01. A profile's `binaries` list authorizes a binary to reach that profile's endpoints. It is not a statement that running the binary asks for the provider, and reading it as attachment intent let a command silently gain provider authority: the aws-s3 example declares /bin/bash, so `sandbox create -- bash` resolved an existing aws-s3 provider and attached its credential-backed capability and network policy to the shell and its descendants. Attachment of an already-created provider never prompted, so the confirmation flow did not guard it. The distinction that would make inference sound — whether a declared binary is a profile's client or merely a permitted runtime — cannot be expressed: NetworkBinary carries only a path, and the field that encoded it was removed in 0.1.0. Any substitute is a guess. Restricting the guess to a unique claimant does not help, because uniqueness measures how sparse the catalog is rather than what the user intended, and a compiled list of "generic" commands could never cover an unbounded operator catalog. Remove trailing-command inference rather than approximate it. A provider is attached only when named with --provider, which still creates a missing provider from local discovery when the name matches an imported profile ID. Sandboxes with no providers remain a normal, fully supported state. Removing inference also settles GATOR-c1bd9867-02: with no consumer deriving authority from the catalog, its only remaining use is the advisory credential warning, so a failed lookup degrades that warning instead of blocking creation. The regression test now asserts that an unreachable catalog still creates the sandbox and attaches nothing. While repurposing the deduplication test, a pre-existing defect surfaced: repeating a name in --provider auto-created it twice and the second attempt failed with "provider already exists", because the explicit pass never consulted the set of names it had already handled. Guard it. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(e2e): load the OIDC token and trust the gateway when seeding profiles Addresses the carried finding GATOR-c1bd9867-03. e2e_register_oidc_admin_session established a session the CLI never used. The CLI decides whether to load a stored bearer token by matching on the auth_mode field of the gateway metadata alone; the helper omitted that field, so the metadata fell through to the default arm and oidc_token.json stayed on disk unread. The profile import went out unauthenticated exactly as it had before the helper existed. The helper also installed no trust anchor, leaving the CLI unable to verify the gateway's self-signed serving certificate. Write auth_mode = "oidc" so the stored token is loaded, and install the CA at <gateway>/mtls/ca.crt. Only the CA is installed: with no client certificate or key on disk the CLI falls back to CA-only server verification and authenticates with the bearer token, which is what these lanes need because they start the gateway without --tls-client-ca. Certificate verification stays on; no insecure transport override is introduced. Assert the session before anything depends on it. ListProviderProfiles is annotated auth_mode: "bearer", so it cannot succeed unless the token was loaded and accepted. The helper now fails at that point, naming the gateway config directory and echoing the CLI output, rather than letting the defect surface later as an opaque profile import error. Both affected wrappers pass the PKI directory and CLI binary the helper needs; the mTLS lanes are untouched. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(e2e): request the OpenShell scopes when minting the admin token The OIDC lanes failed at the session assertion added in b25dd0298 with PERMISSION_DENIED and "scope 'provider:read' required". Authentication was working -- the gateway logged ListProviderProfiles at gRPC status 7, which it can only reach once the bearer token has been loaded and accepted. The token simply carried no OpenShell scope. sandbox:*, provider:*, config:*, workspace:* and openshell:all are optional client scopes on the openshell-cli client in scripts/keycloak-realm.json, so Keycloak mints them only when the request asks for them. The password grant here asked for nothing, leaving the realm defaults (openid, profile, email, roles, web-origins, acr) and an access token that authorizes no RPC. Request "openid openshell:all", as e2e/python/oidc/oidc_auth_test.py already does for its administrator tokens. openshell:all is SCOPE_ALL in crates/openshell-server/src/auth/authz.rs, so one scope covers the setup calls without enumerating them. Verified against the realm: the token goes from "email profile openid" to "email profile openshell:all openid". Record the same scopes in metadata.json. The helper writes the bundle openshell gateway login would have stored, and oidc_scopes is the field that login path reads back, so leaving it out would misdescribe the stored token. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(e2e): seed provider profiles once per VM lane gateway The VM lanes failed on the second test target with "custom provider profile 'anthropic' already exists" for all fifteen example profiles, and the import exited non-zero. e2e_import_example_provider_profiles was called from run_e2e_test, so it ran once per target -- four times against one long-lived gateway. That was harmless while import overwrote silently, but profiles are now import-only: ImportProviderProfiles is create-only and reports an existing id as an error-severity diagnostic, with no overwrite flag on the request. The first import therefore succeeds and every later one fails. Hoist the call to just after the conformance run, which is where the docker, podman and kube lanes already seed their catalogs. The profiles persist for the gateway's lifetime, so every target still finds them, and the E2E_TEST_OVERRIDE path is covered by the same single call. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * test(e2e): name the provider explicitly in the OIDC workspace-user test user_can_create_sandbox_with_inferred_provider_command reached the gateway once the admin session was fixed, and then failed: it asserted a missing-provider error, but the sandbox was created and died provisioning with "failed to spawn sandbox entrypoint process 'claude-code'". The test drove provider resolution by passing claude-code as the trailing command and relying on the CLI to infer the provider type from it. That inference is what this branch removed, so the trailing word is now nothing but an entrypoint, and the image has no such binary. The regression the test guards is not inference itself: it is that a workspace user resolving a provider is not gated behind Platform Admin. Name the provider with --provider, the only remaining way to attach one. The CLI still has to fetch the claude-code profile before it can auto-create the provider, so the lookup a workspace user must be allowed to make still happens, and auto-creation still stops at the non-interactive branch with "missing required provider". Both assertions therefore keep their meaning. Rename the test and rework its comments to describe what it now exercises; the old name would otherwise outlive the behavior it was named for. feat(sandbox): explain failed calls to external tool servers (#3207)
Show configured tool server addresses and their last observed connection results together in sandbox status. Keep sandbox lifecycle readiness separate so an external connection failure does not mark the sandbox unready. Expose direct endpoint records through the CLI and SDKs, with plain-language failure explanations and gateway acceptance times. Keep observation tracking, runtime reporting, and gateway validation in dedicated endpoint status modules. Preserve bounded reporting, request attribution, retry ordering, and configuration and supervisor authority checks. Clear obsolete observations while retaining the configured addresses, and document the distinction between an observed HTTP response, current availability, and tool success. feat(mxc): add Windows ETW-to-OCSF audit trail (#3015)
* feat(mxc): ETW->OCSF audit consumer + Windows OCSF JSONL parity (cp6 P1) Add a Windows MXC ETW->OCSF audit trail in openshell-driver-mxc: a real-time Sandboxing-provider ETW consumer that decodes events (TDH), attributes each to an OpenShell sandbox_id, and maps them to OCSF (lifecycle 6002, config 5019, process 1007, finding 2004). cp6 Phase 1 - durable OCSF JSONL audit-file parity with Linux: - openshell-ocsf: add emit_ocsf_event_routed (populates the event-bridge thread-local AND stamps sandbox_id+message in one dispatch) plus public set/clear_current_event; OS-aware device (Device::windows/for_current_os) so device.os.name reflects the host instead of a hardcoded Linux stub. - etw_consumer: emit via the routed emit (previously fired a bare info! that never populated the bridge, so the structured event was dropped). - openshell-server: install OcsfJsonlLayer over a synchronous daily-rotated appender (durable under force-kill), gated by OPENSHELL_OCSF_JSON, path via %PROGRAMDATA%\OpenShell\logs (override OPENSHELL_OCSF_LOG_DIR). - device.hostname now resolves to the real gateway machine name. Box-proven on 7F203-MXC-001: JSONL lines == shorthand OCSF rows, all valid OCSF JSON, per-sandbox attribution intact, disabled state writes nothing. Signed-off-by: Akber Raza <akberr@nvidia.com> * feat(mxc): map remaining Sandboxing ETW events to OCSF Close the last three ETW->OCSF gaps so the audit trail covers the full set of events the Sandboxing provider emits (12/12): - ProcessLaunched -> Process Activity [1007] "Launch" (confirmed start; carries the real processId/threadId, the twin of CreateProcessInSandbox which only has the request + command line). - SandboxProxyConfigured -> Device Config State Change [5019] (the one network-plane setup event; surfaces proxyPort, "no proxy" when 0). - SandboxConsoleReferencePlumbed -> Device Config State Change [5019] (console-handle plumbing). map_config_state now handles the full config/hardening/setup family and carries proxyPort/hasConsoleReference/creationFlags as unmapped fields. Verified on 7F203-MXC-001: 11/12 event types emit OCSF without a proxy (SandboxProxyConfigured requires proxy config to fire). Signed-off-by: Akber Raza <akberr@nvidia.com> * fix(mxc): seed ETW attribution under registry lock + Device tests Address CodeRabbit review on !31: - Prevent stale ETW attribution on a delete/launch race: register the wxc-exec pid while holding the registry lock, and bail if the sandbox entry is already gone. Previously the attribution key could be seeded after `delete` had removed the sandbox, leaving a stale key that could misroute later Sandboxing ETW events to a dead sandbox_id. Lock order (registry -> attribution) matches the delete path, so no deadlock. - Add unit tests for the new Device::windows and Device::for_current_os constructors to harden Windows/Linux OCSF device parity. Signed-off-by: Akber Raza <akberr@nvidia.com> * fix(mxc-etw): buffer+replay racing events and harden attribution keys Addresses two ETW->OCSF attribution review items (Shailendra #1, #2). #2 early-event loss: ETW delivers the sandbox create/config burst the instant wxc-exec starts, which can beat the driver's register_launch (now under the registry lock post-Ready). process_event previously dropped anything unresolved, losing the racing burst. Add a bounded, time-bounded pending buffer (PENDING_MAX=4096, PENDING_TTL=5s): unresolved events are held and replayed once attribution lands, aged-out ones dropped. Consumer switched to a timed recv_timeout(200ms) so the buffer is re-driven after each event and on a tick. Emit path factored into shared emit_resolved(). #1 attribution collisions: a Windows PID is recycled after exit and a command line is commonly identical across sandboxes. register_launch now rebinds by_pid on reuse and clears the stale last_pid_sid hint (warns if the PID still pointed at a different, leaked sandbox); command line is held in by_cmd only while unique and demoted to a new ambiguous_cmds set on a second owner, so a duplicate command refuses to resolve rather than misroute. Unit tests: buffer replay (direct + cross-link), buffer bound, PID-reuse rebind, duplicate-cmd non-resolution. Box-verified on 7F203-MXC-001 (5 sandboxes, identical cmd -> 5 isolated sandbox_ids, 50/50 OCSF/JSONL, BuffersLost=0). Signed-off-by: Akber Raza <akberr@nvidia.com> * docs(mxc-etw): note cmd_line is captured raw with no privacy filtering Review item #3 (Shailendra): add a PRIVACY NOTE on map_process_launch stating cmd_line is copied verbatim into OCSF process.cmd_line with no redaction, so secrets/PII on a command line land unredacted in the durable audit trail (deliberate audit-fidelity trade-off; treat the log as sensitive). Redaction is owned by an upstream privacy layer, not this path; no general audit-output PII scrubber exists today (openshell_core::secrets [CREDENTIAL] redaction is scoped to the proxy HTTP-target logging, a separate egress path). Signed-off-by: Akber Raza <akberr@nvidia.com> * fix(mxc-etw): open ETW trace on caller thread so start_session reports real status Review item #4 (Shailendra): start_session previously returned Ok(EtwSession) as soon as the pump thread was spawned, but OpenTraceW ran later inside that thread; if it failed we still handed back a live-looking session and logged 'consumer started' (silent failure = false audit coverage). Split the two Win32 calls instead of adding a channel handshake (avoids any lost-wakeup/hang risk): the quick, synchronous OpenTraceW now runs on the caller thread (open_trace), and only the blocking ProcessTrace runs on the pump thread (run_trace). start_session returns Err if OpenTraceW fails (reclaiming the boxed Sender so the consumer disconnects, stopping the session, joining the consumer) and returns Ok/logs 'started' only once capture is genuinely open. Opened handle + LoggerName buffer + boxed Sender are carried to the pump via a Send OpenedTrace so they outlive ProcessTrace. Box-verified on 7F203-MXC-001: consumer started=True, failed-to-start=False, 50 OCSF rows / 50 JSONL, BuffersLost=0 (no regression to capture/emit). Signed-off-by: Akber Raza <akberr@nvidia.com> * fix(mxc-etw): guard pending-event replay against PID recycling CodeRabbit flagged that drain_resolved() re-resolved buffered events against the live by_pid map, so if Windows recycled a wxc-exec PID within PENDING_TTL a stale event from the dead sandbox could be emitted under the new owner. Stamp each by_pid registration with its Instant and add resolve_replay(), used only on the buffered/replay path. It (a) never falls back to the recycle-/ambiguity-prone by_cmd or last_pid_sid keys, and (b) trusts a PID match only when the registration is not newer than the buffered event by more than REPLAY_PID_GRACE (2s) - a recycled PID's registration lands well outside that window, so the stale event ages out instead of misattributing. The legitimate #2 seed race (registration lands ~immediately) still replays. Adds unit tests for the recycle-refusal, in-grace acceptance, and weak-fallback exclusion. Signed-off-by: Akber Raza <akberr@nvidia.com> * fix(mxc-etw): surface unexpected ProcessTrace termination (review #4) start_session already returns Err on OpenTraceW failure (runs on the caller thread since e41a7701), closing the first half of Shailendra's #4. This closes the second half: ProcessTrace's result was discarded, so if capture died mid-run the backend had no way to know. Add a shared CaptureHealth (stopped/stopping/exit_code) between the pump thread and EtwSession. run_trace now records ProcessTrace's WIN32_ERROR and, when the pump returns without a deliberate stop, logs at ERROR that MXC OCSF capture is no longer running. EtwSession::stop() sets `stopping` before teardown so a normal shutdown isn't misreported, and EtwSession::is_capture_alive() exposes the state for status/diagnostics. Box-verified on 7F203-MXC-001: 5 sandboxes, 50 attributed OCSF rows, JSONL parity 50/50, BuffersLost=0, clean start/stop (no false failure). Signed-off-by: Akber Raza <akberr@nvidia.com> * feat(mxc-ocsf): add ETW->OCSF audit-trail example kit; fix proxy-configured message Add a runnable OCSF audit-trail example under examples/ (run-ocsf-audit.ps1, mxc-ocsf-audit.toml, ocsf-audit.yaml, README) that spins up sandboxes with the in-process ETW consumer and egress proxy on, emitting a full OCSF JSONL audit trail across all four classes (6002/5019/1007/2004). Fix SandboxProxyConfigured mapping to log "MXC sandbox proxy configured" instead of a misleading "(no proxy)" when the provider reports proxyPort=0; the event's presence already indicates proxy configuration. Verified on-box: 26 events, all mapped ETW event types present. Signed-off-by: Akber Raza <akberr@nvidia.com> * feat(mxc-ocsf): clearer audit report + client-safe run-ocsf-audit.ps1 Improve the ETW to OCSF audit-trail example output and make it safe to ship. Report: - Add an event-type coverage count ("N of M expected event types fired"); the denominator auto-adjusts (8 with proxy on, 7 with -NoProxy). - Split the checklist into expected event types vs anomaly findings (ActivityError/FallbackError), which are reported separately and not counted toward coverage (a clean run may emit none). - Verdict is now coverage-based (all expected types must fire) instead of the looser "at least 3 OCSF classes". - Call out the absolute path to the durable OCSF JSONL log prominently. Client-safety: - Default -ShareOut to empty (no auto-copy); pass -ShareOut a UNC path to opt in. Removes a hardcoded internal share path from a published example. - Drop internal-team wording ("Hand that zip back for evaluation", "BUNDLE:") in favor of neutral "Results bundle:". - Update README-ocsf-audit.txt to match the opt-in -ShareOut behavior. Verified on both MXC boxes: 7F203-MXC-001 (base-container) -> PASS, 8 of 8 event types, 26 OCSF events across 4 classes; 7F203-MXC-003 (AppContainer fallback) -> reduced set as expected, clean output. Signed-off-by: Akber Raza <akberr@nvidia.com> * fix(mxc): configure OCSF audit workloads per sandbox - remove unsupported gateway-scoped workload fields from the shipped MXC audit example. - build the command, working directory, and filesystem grant from each run's ShareDir - pass the workload through --driver-config-json. - preserve the host CONNECT proxy configuration and conditional audit coverage for the future host_connect_proxy merge - require the workload output when determining the audit verdict. Signed-off-by: Akber Raza <akberr@nvidia.com> * fix(mxc): omit command arguments from OCSF audit logs - record only the executable basename for MXC CreateProcessInSandbox audit events - leave process.cmd_line unset so workload arguments cannot reach shorthand or JSONL logs - cover tokens, passwords, signed URLs, and PII with a secret-leak regression test - update the audit example, architecture guidance, and published logging documentation - preserve ETW attribution and future host_connect_proxy enforcement behavior Signed-off-by: Akber Raza <akberr@nvidia.com> * feat(etw): enhance ETW session management with distinct naming for concurrent gateways * fix(etw): bound the audit queue during overload - replace the unbounded ETW callback channel with count- and byte-bounded buffering - keep the ETW callback non-blocking and count records rejected during overload - emit immediate, rate-limited warnings that identify resulting audit coverage gaps - make the audit example fail when queue overload causes dropped ETW records - cover stalled consumers, oversized events, and warning throttling with unit tests Signed-off-by: Akber Raza <akberr@nvidia.com> * fix(etw): harden sandbox audit attribution - remove command-line and persistent per-PID fallback keys from live and replay resolution - retire the driver-owned wxc-exec PID before publishing child completion - retain established identity, activity, and correlation-vector links only for the five-second late-event window - prevent buffered records from crossing rapid PID retirement and reuse boundaries - add resolver and lifecycle coverage and document the attribution trust boundary Signed-off-by: Akber Raza <akberr@nvidia.com> * chore(mxc): address rebase follow-ups Signed-off-by: Drew Newberry <anewberry@nvidia.com> * fix(mxc): align OCSF audit example with driver config - remove unsupported egress proxy settings - stop requiring the unavailable proxy audit event - update example documentation for supported event coverage Signed-off-by: Akber Raza <akberr@nvidia.com> * fix(etw): redact command-line secrets in DecodedEtwEvent summary * fix(etw): enhance PID resolution and event attribution logic for ETW records * fix(ocsf): restrict gateway-local JSONL sink to Windows/MXC path with opt-in configuration * address rebase issues * fix(mxc): address ETW audit review feedback Signed-off-by: Drew Newberry <anewberry@nvidia.com> * fix(mxc): fail closed across ambiguous PID reuse Signed-off-by: Drew Newberry <anewberry@nvidia.com> * fix(mxc): bind ETW attribution to process generation Signed-off-by: Drew Newberry <anewberry@nvidia.com> --------- Signed-off-by: Akber Raza <akberr@nvidia.com> Signed-off-by: Drew Newberry <anewberry@nvidia.com> Co-authored-by: Jamie King <jamiek@nvidia.com> Co-authored-by: Drew Newberry <anewberry@nvidia.com> |

feat(build): add defaults-without-telemetry feature alias (#2843)
* feat(build): add defaults-without-telemetry feature alias Cargo cannot subtract a single default feature, so compiling telemetry out meant `--no-default-features` plus a hand-maintained keep-list of the crate's other defaults. That keep-list was already wrong for operators: telemetry is the only default on openshell-server and openshell-driver-vm, but openshell-sandbox also defaults to `bundled-ca-roots`, so a bare `--no-default-features` silently swapped the supervisor onto the platform trust store. Add a `defaults-without-telemetry` alias to each of the three telemetry- carrying binary crates, enumerating every default except `telemetry`. Telemetry-free builds become `--no-default-features --features defaults-without-telemetry` and stay correct as the default set grows. The alias is a keep-list, not a switch. Enabling it on top of the defaults would otherwise produce a telemetry-on binary that reads as telemetry-free, so each crate root carries a `compile_error!` for the `telemetry` + `defaults-without-telemetry` combination. Add `rust:verify:defaults-without-telemetry` to guard both properties: each alias still equals its crate's defaults minus `telemetry`, and the mutual-exclusion error is wired up. The additive-misuse check matches on the `compile_error!` text rather than a nonzero exit code so it cannot pass vacuously on hosts where openshell-driver-vm fails to build for unrelated reasons. `rust:verify:telemetry-off` now builds through the alias. feat(driver-mxc): native Windows MXC compute driver + server wiring (#2721)
* feat(driver): add MXC compute driver for Windows isolation sessions Introduces the openshell-driver-mxc crate implementing ComputeDriver backed by Microsoft MXC isolation sessions (Windows only). Wires the new driver into the server's build_compute_runtime dispatch and adds the Mxc variant to ComputeDriverKind. Also adds a local protobuf-src stub (tools/protobuf-src-local) to unblock Windows builds that lack MSYS2/MinGW, and pins the zig Windows x64 toolchain in mise.lock. (cherry picked from commit 4f7012224efb18fbfeb47aa87e0cfd3f036f32f0) Signed-off-by: Jamie King <jamiek@nvidia.com> * wip(mxc): checkpoint hung-agent work (recon, policy_map embed, A1 wiring, demo artifacts) Safety checkpoint of uncommitted work from the background agent run that stalled mid-Step-7. Includes: mxc-driver-recon.md (Step 0.5), policy_map.rs (~876L embedded mapper), A1 policy-threading edits across driver.rs/policy.rs/mxc.rs/compute/mod.rs, and examples/ (demo.yaml + mxc-gateway.toml). Not yet verified to compile end-to-end; to be reorganized into the skill's Step 11 commit sequence. (cherry picked from commit 38e42c03870be3d10e984a54f17a3b61122ff510) Signed-off-by: Jamie King <jamiek@nvidia.com> * test(mxc): fix lifecycle and policy unit-test compile drift - Bring futures::StreamExt into scope for the watch-stream `.next()` call in driver::lifecycle_tests so the negative policy proof test compiles. - Bind a local `mapper` and drop the unused/deprecated NetworkBinary in the embedded-mapper network-policy rejection test. Signed-off-by: Jamie King <jamiek@nvidia.com> (cherry picked from commit 039b0baf98735ca672dae52be8d3af2417dc0c1a) Signed-off-by: Jamie King <jamiek@nvidia.com> * fix(mxc): downgrade missing sandbox_token to debug log The gateway mints `sandbox_token` only when a sandbox-JWT issuer is configured. There is no in-sandbox supervisor on MXC (supervisor-removal design — D1/D4), so no component ever consumes the token; requiring it on the driver side blocks the demo's `--disable-tls` smoke gateway with a spurious `invalid_argument`. Log the absence and proceed instead. Signed-off-by: Jamie King <jamiek@nvidia.com> (cherry picked from commit cea209797d0edcb1d152251e748900b0a63cca62) Signed-off-by: Jamie King <jamiek@nvidia.com> * fix(mxc): keep sandbox Ready after a successful one-shot agent exec monitor_exec demoted Ready->Error on exit 0 (reason ExecCompleted), so the positive demo (write hello.txt + exit) landed in Error phase. Keep Ready=True (reason AgentCompleted) on success; only non-zero exits go to ExecFailed. Tighten the positive lifecycle test to assert the terminal condition stays Ready=True/AgentCompleted. Verified live via gateway mock round-trip: phase now Provisioning->Ready with no demotion. (cherry picked from commit 54ab030f03ca0f83d0050d8dd843b633651684ad) Signed-off-by: Jamie King <jamiek@nvidia.com> * feat(mxc): add processContainer backend for default-deny enforcement Add a backend selector to the MXC driver (isolation_session default | process_container). process_container drives a one-shot AppContainer that is genuinely default-deny: a write to any ungranted path is denied by the OS, unlike isolation_session which is grant-only and cannot deny. The lifecycle forks on the flag - isolation_session keeps provision/start/exec, process_container runs a single ephemeral container via run_oneshot. Also: run-demo.ps1 gains -Backend and hardens the CLI register/create calls; docs corrected to state isolation_session does NOT deny out-of-policy writes and that the negative proof requires process_container. Verified end-to-end on a real demo box (gateway -> CLI -> driver -> MXC): in-policy write succeeds, out-of-policy write denied (PermissionDenied), OVERALL: PASS. (cherry picked from commit c6cde3860bbe1b8edb3147d3e840f6bf0ece32d8) Signed-off-by: Jamie King <jamiek@nvidia.com> * refactor(driver-mxc): embed policy mapper as a module; remove standalone crate Adopt the proto-based mapper (map_to_mxc) as the single source of truth, embedded in openshell-driver-mxc as a Windows-gated `policy_map` module. Rewire EmbeddedPolicyMapper to call it directly on the typed SandboxPolicy, deleting the serde_yaml proto->YAML bridge. Move the CLI to a windows-gated example and the parity tests into the crate; delete openshell-policy-mapper. - gate policy_map + seam Windows-only (MXC is Windows-only) - drop serde_yaml; add dev-deps openshell-policy, clap, anyhow - normalize mapped paths to Windows form in the seam, in one place - docs: add driver-mxc to AGENTS.md table; correct design doc section 17 test lane Signed-off-by: Giedrius Burachas <gburachas@nvidia.com> (cherry picked from commit f22f9c7a25b9a651c5c5cc73f62fb01c4d6c1a8d) Signed-off-by: Jamie King <jamiek@nvidia.com> * feat(driver-mxc): implement lossless split_policy for proxy-delegated egress Signed-off-by: Giedrius Burachas <gburachas@nvidia.com> (cherry picked from commit 96d6afa0e2dc6a1d54edd12c34a0ceb0a30dadd0) Signed-off-by: Jamie King <jamiek@nvidia.com> * feat(driver-mxc): implement Pattern-C governed-egress split through the policy seam - split_policy: SocketAddr proxy_redirect (replaces bare port), processcontainer containment guard naming MXC M1, version preserved in the trimmed proxy_policy, delegation reported as an info loss item - seam: MappedConfig carries trimmed_policy + proxy_addr; MapCtx.egress selects the split path; coarse path unchanged when egress is disabled - driver: [openshell.drivers.mxc] egress_proxy / egress_proxy_addr config, validated at create (isolation_session rejected until M1); lifecycle threads the redirect into provision and stores the trimmed policy per sandbox, emitting an EgressRedirect platform event - mxc: optional MxcNetwork block (defaultPolicy=block + proxy) in provision and one-shot configs; mock records configs for test assertions - tests: lossless-invariant suite over all example policies (validate + serialize round-trip), split lifecycle proof, M1 rejection; example gains --split --proxy-addr writing mxc-config.json / trimmed-policy.yaml / loss-report.json Signed-off-by: Giedrius Burachas <gburachas@nvidia.com> (cherry picked from commit 34d54ad9f25dc6034c3ba15668555ff0d22cddd8) Signed-off-by: Jamie King <jamiek@nvidia.com> * fix(driver-mxc): emit MXC network.proxy as {localhost: port} Verified against the real wxc-exec 0.6.0-alpha via --dry-run: MXC accepts only the {localhost: N} proxy shape (the form the design doc specifies) and rejects {host, port} with a parse error. Schema 0.6.0-alpha can express only a loopback port, so non-127.0.0.1 redirect addresses are now rejected: split_policy emits an error loss (no proxy block) and the driver refuses egress_proxy_addr values off 127.0.0.1. Per-sandbox attribution must use per-sandbox ports until the schema widens. Signed-off-by: Giedrius Burachas <gburachas@nvidia.com> (cherry picked from commit edde8d5434571fd5398409204fcf6862672c0793) Signed-off-by: Jamie King <jamiek@nvidia.com> * fix(driver-mxc): serialize isolation_session stop/deprovision as unit variants Empirical contract finding from the real test lane (build 26300.8553, wxc-exec 2026-06-10): the stop and deprovision experimental blocks are unit variants in the wxc-exec schema and must serialize as null; sending {} is rejected with malformed_request (invalid type: map, expected unit), while provision/start accept maps. The production invoker, the real-lane test, the probe script, and the e2e runner all sent {} - the driver could provision and run an agent but never stop or delete an isolation-session sandbox against this build. Pinned by a unit test. Signed-off-by: Giedrius Burachas <gburachas@nvidia.com> (cherry picked from commit 0df39ca0b22ebc21eb965b2b567a5b2cac26af32) Signed-off-by: Jamie King <jamiek@nvidia.com> * test(driver-mxc): add Tier-0 mapper coverage matrix with schema drift guard Three-quadrant, table-driven matrix (38 tests): mappable fields assert exact MXC output; every OpenShell field MXC cannot express asserts a loss item with the expected severity (and seam rejection on error); an empty policy asserts the restrictive default-deny posture for every MXC knob OpenShell does not control. The handled_fields_inventory drift guard serializes a fully-populated policy and compares its YAML keys against the mapper-handled field lists, so a new openshell-policy field fails the suite until consciously mapped, delegated, or reported as loss. Re-exports the policy seam types for integration tests; adds serde_yml, base64, serde_json as dev-dependencies. Signed-off-by: Giedrius Burachas <gburachas@nvidia.com> (cherry picked from commit 91807f984a3b16846e35d6ca0d5ec41057aafa3a) Signed-off-by: Jamie King <jamiek@nvidia.com> * feat(driver-mxc): inject agent_env into sandbox process.env Add MxcComputeConfig.agent_env: each entry is either KEY=VALUE (verbatim) or a bare KEY resolved from the gateway host environment at launch, keeping secrets (e.g. inference API keys) out of the config file. Wire it into the agent process so gateway-launched agents can authenticate to cloud endpoints (process.env was previously hardcoded empty). Unit-tested via resolve_agent_env_passthrough_and_host_lookup. Also add a gateway-driven cloud-inference (T1) test harness: mxc-inference.toml (agent_env + curl agent), inference.yaml policy, and run-inference-test.ps1 which starts the gateway, creates an isolation_session sandbox, runs an authenticated Nemotron call, and bundles redacted results. Documented agent_env in mxc-gateway.toml. Validated end-to-end on the test box (chat HTTP 200 + completion via the gateway). Preserves all three behaviors under test and drops the #[allow(unsafe_code)]. (cherry picked from commit ac5766eeab2db4e8cc6fcd8d8a97809edaf3df30) Signed-off-by: Jamie King <jamiek@nvidia.com> * fix(mxc): adapt MXC driver to current GitHub OpenShell API The MXC driver crate was authored on GitLab against an earlier proto/core API. Adapt it to the API on GitHub main: - build_capabilities_response no longer takes supports_interactive_session - DriverSandboxSpec.gpu (bool) is now resource_requirements; detect GPU via effective_driver_gpu_count(driver_gpu_requirements(..)) - DriverSandbox gained a `workspace` field - SandboxPolicy gained `network_middlewares`: pass it through the proxy split, emit a loss item on the coarse MXC path, and account for it in the mapper drift-guard test Verified: cargo check + 75 mock-based tests pass (lib 27, examples 10, policy_mapper_matrix 38). Signed-off-by: Jamie King <jamiek@nvidia.com> * feat(server): wire the MXC compute driver into the gateway on Windows Register openshell-driver-mxc as the Windows-only in-process compute backend so compute_driver = "mxc" resolves to a working runtime: - ComputeRuntime::new_mxc, adapted to the current 11-arg from_driver - mxc_policy_sink A1 side channel, staged in create_sandbox before dispatch - mxc_config_from_context loader and the Mxc dispatch arm (Windows constructs; other targets return an explicit "Windows-only" error) - Windows-gated openshell-driver-mxc dependency - Mxc arms for the telemetry, config-file required-fields, and CLI reserved-builtin matches to keep them exhaustive/correct Verified with cargo check --workspace --features openshell-prover/bundled-z3 on x86_64-pc-windows-msvc, stacked on PR #2496. Six --dry-run contract tests run wherever the binary exists (they caught the network.proxy shape mismatch); enforcement tests (processcontainer default-deny positive/negative, isolation session lifecycle round trip with a deprovision drop-guard) probe the backend and SKIP with a recorded reason where it is not live. - examples/probe-mxc-host.ps1: classifies a host (OS build, --probe, per-backend trial) and emits a JSON capability verdict. - examples/run-mxc-e2e.ps1 + e2e-policies/: scenario runner generalizing run-demo.ps1 (fs-rw, fs-readonly, fs-default-deny-empty, network-policy-rejected) with PASS/FAIL/SKIP gating and a stale OPENSHELL_MXC_MOCK_WXC guard in real mode. - tasks/windows.toml: windows:test:mxc-real:x64, windows:e2e:mxc, windows:e2e:mxc:mock. feat(compute): add standalone first-party drivers (#2822)
* feat(compute): add standalone first-party drivers Build Docker, Podman, Kubernetes, and VM drivers as external binaries and exercise each through the public compute-driver API. Keep the external E2E setup complete at introduction, including VM image selection, Kubernetes post-renderer isolation, supervisor reuse, and scoped Podman coverage. External Kubernetes endpoints support shared and managed workspace modes. Operator mode remains restricted to the in-process driver because gateway authentication and the driver must share a dynamic namespace allowlist. fix(security): authenticate extension services (#2638)
* fix(security): authenticate extension services Signed-off-by: Piotr Mlocek <pmlocek@nvidia.com> * feat(extension-core): verify gateway JWTs Signed-off-by: Piotr Mlocek <pmlocek@nvidia.com> * refactor(extension-core): keep inbound verification external This should become an extension SDK package. Signed-off-by: Piotr Mlocek <pmlocek@nvidia.com> * fix(security): harden the extension authentication contract Follow-up hardening on the alpha extension authentication mechanism. Claim contract: - Extension tokens carry an explicit `typ` of `openshell-ext+jwt`. They share a signing key with sandbox-to-gateway admission tokens and were otherwise separated by audience alone, so a verifier that neglects to check `aud` could accept a gateway credential. The header is a second, independent discriminator. - Publish OIDC-shaped discovery at `/.well-known/openid-configuration` so a service configured with only the gateway URL can learn the exact expected issuer and the JWKS location. It is shaped, not compliant: `issuer` is the gateway identity, not the serving URL. Audience agreement: - `MiddlewareManifest` and `InterceptorManifest` gain `expected_audience`. The audience is otherwise configured independently on each side of the boundary, where a mismatch surfaces only as an opaque authentication failure on every call. OpenShell now compares the two and fails at startup. An empty field keeps the check off for existing services. Compatibility: - Add `allow_insecure_transport` per registration. Enabling gateway JWT signing previously made any plaintext endpoint a hard startup failure, including the endpoint form used in our own documentation. The opt-out attaches no credential, is refused by the gateway if a supervisor asks for one, and warns at every startup. - Make the transport requirement kind-aware. A middleware endpoint must be reachable from every sandbox supervisor, so only interceptors may use a gateway-local Unix socket. Credential lifecycle: - Replace the process-global slot map with a supervisor-owned `ExtensionCredentialStore` shared explicitly across the gateway connections the supervisor opens, removing test-order coupling. - Rotate only when a credential is missing or has passed four fifths of its lifetime. Configuration polling ran every ten seconds against fifteen-minute credentials, so each poll re-ran gateway effective-policy resolution and re-minted the gateway token. - Bound credential minting per sandbox, since each request resolves the caller's effective policy. Signed-off-by: Piotr Mlocek <pmlocek@nvidia.com> * docs: record alpha extension authentication in RFC appendices Restore the RFC 0009 and 0010 bodies to their accepted text and move every extension-authentication update into appendices instead. An RFC records a decision at a point in time; superseding detail belongs alongside it rather than rewritten into it. RFC 0009's appendix carries the shared contract: claims, authorization, key distribution, the `allow_insecure_transport` replacement for the body's `allow_insecure`, and residual risks. RFC 0010's records only what differs for interceptors and links to it. The existing protocol-extensions appendix, which parked the phase 2 transport question, now points forward to what was built. Also document the audience handshake, the discovery endpoint, the `typ` requirement, and `jti` replay guidance in the extensibility and gateway configuration pages, and correct the middleware transport guidance: middleware endpoints must be reachable from sandbox supervisors, so Unix sockets are not an option there. Per AGENTS.md (Documentation) and architecture/README.md ("rfc/ vs architecture/"), design content belongs in architecture/ (or rfc/), not in published reference. It also shared Fern sidebar "position: 6" with the MXC compute-driver design page, colliding in the Reference nav ordering. What: - Move docs/reference/windows-msvc-build-design.mdx -> architecture/windows-msvc-build.md. - Strip the Fern publish frontmatter and add a plain H1, matching the other architecture docs. - Register it in the architecture doc index in architecture/README.md. - Repoint the inbound references (build-openshell-mxc-windows skill + reference, implement-openshell-mxc-driver skill) to the new path. With both design pages moved out of docs/reference/, the duplicate position-6 sidebar collision is resolved. feat(credentials): add provider credential storage drivers (#2437)
* feat(credentials): add provider credential storage drivers Signed-off-by: Taylor Mutch <taylormutch@gmail.com> * fix(credentials): harden credential update handling Signed-off-by: Taylor Mutch <taylormutch@gmail.com> * fix(credentials): harden credential driver security, correctness, and performance Address review findings from the credential storage drivers PR: - Route additional_credentials through the driver on refresh to prevent silent data loss for multi-credential providers (e.g. AWS STS) - Clean up stored credential handles on CAS failure during refresh to prevent orphaned secrets in external backends - Enforce namespace validation in the Kubernetes Secrets driver to prevent cross-namespace credential access when allow_reference_namespace is not enabled - Cache Vault Kubernetes auth tokens with 80% TTL to avoid re-authenticating on every credential operation - Parallelize resolve_credentials in all three drivers using try_join_all for faster sandbox startup - Add existingSecret support for the KEK Secret to fix helm template/GitOps workflows where lookup returns empty and regenerates the key - Document RBAC blast radius for the Kubernetes Secrets credential driver and recommend a dedicated namespace Signed-off-by: Varsha Prasad <varshaprasad96@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Varsha Prasad Narsing <varshaprasad96@gmail.com> * fix(credentials): add optimistic concurrency, fix thundering herd, parallelize operations Use resourceVersion optimistic concurrency with retry loop for K8s Secret ownership checks to prevent TOCTOU races. Switch Vault token cache from RwLock to Mutex with double-check pattern to prevent thundering herd on cache miss. Parallelize credential store and delete operations across independent keys using try_join_all. Signed-off-by: Varsha Prasad <varshaprasad96@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Varsha Prasad Narsing <varshaprasad96@gmail.com> * fix(credentials): handle partial failures, add delete retry, consolidate cleanup Replace try_join_all with join_all in credential store/delete operations to handle partial failures — successfully-stored handles are cleaned up when another key fails. Add retry loop with conflict detection to db-credstore delete_credential, matching the K8s driver pattern. Consolidate 4 manual cleanup_pre_stored_provider_credentials call sites into a single error handler using an async block. Remove inconsistent .trim() from db-credstore validate_handle_owner. Signed-off-by: Varsha Prasad <varshaprasad96@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Varsha Prasad Narsing <varshaprasad96@gmail.com> * fix(credentials): fix retry loop guard and remove unprotected validation Remove attempt-count guard from 409/Aborted match arms in retry loops so the post-loop Status::aborted error is reachable after exhausting retries. Previously, last-attempt conflicts fell through to the catch-all error arm, producing misleading Status::unavailable errors. Remove duplicate validation calls that ran after prepare_provider_credential_update but outside the cleanup-protected async block, which would leak pre-stored handles on failure. Signed-off-by: Varsha Prasad <varshaprasad96@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Varsha Prasad Narsing <varshaprasad96@gmail.com> * fix(credentials): add workspace/provider UUID to credential backend paths Include workspace and provider ID in credential backend object paths to ensure cross-workspace uniqueness and prevent credential collision (GATOR-1806c9be-01). - Updated credential driver proto to include workspace and provider_id fields - Modified Vault driver to include workspace/provider_id in managed_secret_path - Modified Kubernetes Secrets driver to include workspace/provider_id in credential_owner_id and managed_secret_name - Updated all credential runtime calls to pass workspace/provider_id - Updated tests to use the new signatures This prevents two workspaces sharing the same external credential store from colliding on provider names, which was a critical security issue (CWE-639). * fix(credentials): preserve provider-level expiration for handle-backed credentials Compute effective expiration from both provider and driver values using the earliest non-zero timestamp and skip expired values before insertion (GATOR-1806c9be-02). - Modified resolve_provider_handles to check provider credential_expires_at_ms - Skip expired credentials during resolution instead of returning them - Use effective expiration (min of provider and driver) in resolution results - Fix inference.rs to preserve earliest expiration when merging This ensures handle-backed credentials respect the same expiration semantics as inline credentials. * fix(credentials): stage refresh changes under new handles before validation Stage credential replacements under new immutable handles instead of reusing existing handles to prevent overwriting committed values before validation/CAS (GATOR-1806c9be-03). - Stage credentials with empty existing_handles map to force new handle creation - Validate and CAS before the new values are committed to backend storage - Delete old handles only after successful CAS - On CAS failure, delete only the newly staged handles - This prevents CWE-362/CWE-367 race conditions where failed refreshes could still modify or delete the active credential The fix ensures that a rejected refresh cannot modify the backend object still referenced by the committed provider record. * fix(credentials): add timeouts to credential driver RPCs Apply configured timeouts to both startup capability negotiation and runtime RPCs to prevent indefinite hangs (GATOR-1806c9be-05). - Add DEFAULT_CREDENTIAL_DRIVER_RPC_TIMEOUT_SECS constant (30s) - Apply timeout to GetCapabilities during startup connection - Apply timeout to all runtime RPCs (store, delete, resolve) - Use tokio::time::timeout to bound the entire GetCapabilities operation during startup, not just the socket connection - Return contextual deadline errors on timeout This prevents a faulty or overloaded driver from hanging gateway operations indefinitely. * fix(credentials): fix test to use consistent workspace/provider identity The Kubernetes auth Vault resolve test was constructing a managed path with test-workspace/test-provider-id but sending default/prov-123 in the request, causing validation to reject the request (GATOR-18e32351-01). - Update test to use test-workspace and test-provider-id in the request to match the logical_path construction - This ensures the test exercises the intended code path and validates Kubernetes auth resolution properly The test now passes and correctly validates identity enforcement. * fix(credentials): use unique staging ID for refresh to avoid overwrites Stage refresh replacements under genuinely distinct immutable handles using a unique staging ID to prevent overwriting committed values (GATOR-1806c9be-03). - Generate a unique staging ID using UUID for each refresh operation - Use this staging ID when storing credentials instead of the real provider ID - Pass the same staging ID during cleanup on failure to delete only staged objects - This ensures deterministic paths (Vault) and object names (K8s) don't collide with the committed provider's credentials The fix prevents failed refreshes from silently replacing active credentials or breaking providers by deleting still-referenced backend objects. * fix(credentials): wrap credential driver RPCs in local timeouts Add local tokio::time::timeout wrappers around credential driver RPCs to bound non-compliant or stalled UDS peers (GATOR-1806c9be-05). - Wrap StoreCredential, DeleteCredential, and ResolveCredentials in local timeouts - Return contextual deadline_exceeded errors when timeouts occur - Keep existing gRPC timeout metadata for compliant implementations - GetCapabilities during startup was already wrapped in previous commit This ensures a faulty local driver cannot hang gateway operations indefinitely, even if it accepts the connection but never responds to the RPC. * fix(credentials): preserve ownership for staged refreshes Signed-off-by: Seth Jennings <sjenning@redhat.com> * fix(credentials): bound startup capability probe Signed-off-by: Seth Jennings <sjenning@redhat.com> * test(provider): authenticate credential handler requests Signed-off-by: Seth Jennings <sjenning@redhat.com> * fix(ci): grant actions read to credential driver e2e Signed-off-by: Seth Jennings <sjenning@redhat.com> --------- Signed-off-by: Taylor Mutch <taylormutch@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Varsha Prasad <varshaprasad96@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Varsha Prasad Narsing <varshaprasad96@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Seth Jennings <sjenning@redhat.com> Co-authored-by: Taylor Mutch <taylormutch@gmail.com> Co-authored-by: Varsha Prasad Narsing <varshaprasad96@gmail.com> |

feat(build): add system CA root mode (#2324)
* feat(build): add system CA root mode Allow distro builds to use native trust stores for supervisor upstream TLS while keeping bundled Mozilla roots as the default. Avoid bundled root crates in system-ca-roots builds by using native-root TLS features and z3 0.20. Signed-off-by: Adam Miller <admiller@redhat.com> * fix(build): keep CA root feature in telemetry-off verification The telemetry-off task uses --no-default-features which now disables bundled-ca-roots in addition to telemetry, triggering the compile_error guard. Re-enable bundled-ca-roots explicitly so the task verifies only telemetry compilation. Signed-off-by: Scott Burdine <sburdine@nvidia.com> Signed-off-by: politerealism <burdcat17@gmail.com> * fix(sdk): disable oauth2 default features to prevent webpki-roots leak The bare `oauth2 = "5"` dependency re-enabled default features (rustls-tls → reqwest/rustls-tls → webpki-roots), defeating the system-ca-roots feature gate. Mirror the CLI fix: disable defaults and enable only the `reqwest` feature. feat(vm): export driver traces over OTLP (#2564)
Continue distributed traces across the gateway-to-driver process boundary and export VM driver spans to the same OTLP/gRPC collector. The driver reports as the distinct openshell-driver-vm service. Updated the gateway architecture and configuration reference with a generic external-driver forwarding contract. Instrumented: - Every RemoteComputeDriver RPC injects the active W3C trace context into tonic metadata. Managed VM readiness and runtime initialization give startup capability probes stable parent operations rather than isolated root spans. - A tonic service layer creates fixed, low-cardinality server spans for every ComputeDriver RPC. New handlers inherit tracing automatically; failures record OpenTelemetry error status and the gRPC status code. - Background provisioning remains attached to CreateSandbox after the RPC returns without extending the RPC span lifetime. - Provisioning records image preparation, bootstrap image resolution, overlay preparation, lifecycle configuration, pre-launch hooks, guest preparation, and launcher spawn as child spans. - VM startup reconciliation roots one trace for the persisted-sandbox scan, with per-sandbox restore and provision operations beneath it. The root remains open until all spawned restore tasks finish. - Delete cleanup records its own child operation. Design notes: - The gateway forwards its configured OTLP endpoint to managed external drivers. SDK `OTEL_*` variables continue to own sampling, batching, limits, headers, and transport tuning. - The VM driver has its own tracer provider and service resource so trace backends preserve the service boundary. - RPC operation names come from an explicit method mapping, keeping cardinality bounded without parsing the protobuf descriptor set at runtime. - Propagation uses a remote SpanContext for spawned provisioning. This keeps one trace while allowing the CreateSandbox server span to finish when the RPC response is sent. - Startup restoration is independent of gateway requests. It begins at the VM driver reconciliation span rather than attaching to an unrelated RPC. - Existing tracing events remain on the logging path. The OpenTelemetry layer exports spans only and excludes the SDK exporter callsites to avoid recursive traces. - Export configuration failures do not prevent the driver from serving, and buffered spans are drained during graceful shutdown. - Trace fields identify drivers, sandboxes, images, lifecycle phases, and gRPC outcomes without recording credentials, sandbox tokens, or request query parameters. fix(server): isolate otel tracing test exporters (#2579)
Give each span-assertion test its own thread-scoped in-memory exporter so parallel tests cannot contaminate or reset captured spans. Keep a bare global tracing registry only to preserve callsite interest, and serialize scoped subscriber changes because tracing caches that interest process-wide. Remove the test-only OTLP collector, polling delivery barrier, transport-specific test, and direct opentelemetry-proto dependency. Seed the expected persistence conflict before tracing begins so its assertion window contains only the operation under test. Signed-off-by: Kris Hicks <khicks@nvidia.com> |

refactor(otel): share OTLP trace provider setup (#2567)
Extract common OpenTelemetry provider construction into openshell-otel so OpenShell services share one OTLP/gRPC export implementation. The shared crate owns: - typed exporter setup errors and non-fatal provider enablement; - endpoint trimming and URI validation before lazy exporter connection; - fixed and environment-or-default service-name policies; - service version and caller-supplied resource attributes; - batch tracer-provider construction; and - span-only tracing layers that exclude OpenTelemetry exporter callsites. Migrate the gateway to the shared provider while retaining its configurable service name, error marking, and tracing test collector. feat(gateway): export traces over OTLP (#2534)
Add an opt-in OTLP/gRPC trace exporter to the gateway. Export is enabled
by the presence of an `[openshell.gateway.otlp]` table with an endpoint;
there is no separate toggle.
Instrumented:
- Inbound request server spans, named for the RPC (`$service/$method`) or
`{method} {path}` for plain HTTP. They continue valid W3C `traceparent`
context when present and start a new trace otherwise. gRPC spans also
carry `rpc.system`, `rpc.service`, `rpc.method`, and trailer-derived
`rpc.grpc.status_code`.
- Compute driver calls (create, delete, list, get, validate, watch) as
client spans anchored on the `ComputeDriver` contract.
- Store reads and writes as children of the current request or loop span.
- Work with no inbound request: compute driver initialization, the sandbox
reconcile sweep, provider credential refresh tick, and driver watch events.
Each roots one operation trace so its child work does not arrive as anonymous
single-span traces.
This is deliberately not exhaustive. Auth, policy evaluation, and
middleware remain uninstrumented, as do store lifecycle calls (`ping`,
`close`) that a readiness poll would turn into a span per tick. The aim is
a useful trace tree at a reviewable size; coverage can grow against real
traces.
Design notes:
- The TOML table owns whether and where to export. The SDK `OTEL_*`
variables own how; sampling, batching, and limits are not mirrored into
gateway config.
- The OpenTelemetry layer exports spans only. Existing `tracing` events
remain on the stdout and sandbox-log paths and are not copied into trace
payloads.
- Telemetry never blocks the gateway. A malformed endpoint logs an error
and disables export rather than failing startup, and buffered spans are
drained during graceful shutdown.
- Failed spans carry error status without a separate `error.type` attribute.
Request spans use HTTP status and gRPC response trailers; driver spans use
the returned gRPC status; autonomous loop spans record failed results
explicitly. Store spans exempt `UniqueViolation` and `Conflict`, because
those errors report expected contention such as a held lease or an
optimistic-concurrency retry.
- The compute driver is reachable only through `TracedDriver::call`, so a
call cannot skip its span. This is the client half of a client/server pair
and the single place to inject context if drivers move out of process.
- Tests share one process-wide subscriber and in-memory exporter because
`tracing` caches callsite interest globally.
Inbound W3C trace context is propagated into gateway request spans. Context
is not yet injected into outbound driver calls, so a future out-of-process
driver would still need propagation at the `TracedDriver` seam.
The Helm chart is intentionally unchanged, so OTLP export cannot yet be
enabled on a chart-deployed gateway.

Wire authorization into workspace model (#2445)
* feat(auth): implement RFC 0011 Phase 2 workspace authorization Signed-off-by: Derek Carr <decarr@redhat.com> * fix(auth): address PR review feedback on workspace authorization - Docker e2e: add --health-port and switch readiness probe from `openshell status` to `curl /healthz`, fixing a false-positive readiness check in OIDC mode where the CLI exited 0 without actually contacting the gateway - ListWorkspaces: move membership filtering from post-query N+1 lookups into a SQL EXISTS subquery so pagination applies to the visible set, not the global ordering. Add generic list_with_membership to the persistence layer. - Descriptor validator: reject role/scope fields on unauthenticated and sandbox auth modes, and allow-list workspace_role as user/admin and global_role as platform_admin to catch typos at startup Signed-off-by: Derek Carr <decarr@redhat.com> * fix(server): use authed request in delete telemetry test The workspace authorization added by the Phase 2 auth changes requires a Principal on every delete request. The delete-telemetry test was still using a bare Request::new, so extract_principal failed before the handler could acquire the delete gate, causing a 5-second timeout flake. Signed-off-by: Derek Carr <decarr@redhat.com> * fix(auth): address gator review findings for workspace authorization - Inject unauthenticated-local-dev principal in no-auth gateway mode so handlers that call extract_principal() always find one. - Cap label-selector membership query at MAX_PAGE_SIZE instead of u32::MAX to bound the in-memory read. - Authorize workspace membership before resolving workspace existence in all sandbox RPCs to prevent workspace-name enumeration by non-members. - Remove dead_code allow on AuthorizedWorkspace.workspace now that callers use the normalized name from the authz result. Signed-off-by: Derek Carr <decarr@redhat.com> * fix(auth): close workspace-name oracle and label-selector truncation Swap authorize-before-resolve ordering in 27 handlers across provider.rs, service.rs, policy.rs, and workspace.rs to prevent CWE-203 workspace-name enumeration by non-members. Add combined membership+label SQL query (list_with_membership_and_selector) to both persistence backends so ListWorkspaces with label selectors no longer silently drops results beyond the first page of membership matches. Signed-off-by: Derek Carr <decarr@redhat.com> * test(auth): add non-member rejection and membership+label persistence tests Add comprehensive test coverage for workspace authorization changes: - Non-member rejection tests across all 44 workspace-scoped handlers (sandbox, provider, service, policy, workspace, inference) verifying PERMISSION_DENIED is returned instead of NOT_FOUND to prevent CWE-203 workspace-name oracle - Persistence test for list_with_membership_and_selector verifying SQL-level membership EXISTS + label filtering, multiple predicates, no-match cases, and pagination Signed-off-by: Derek Carr <decarr@redhat.com> * fix(auth): format merged import line in sandbox tests Signed-off-by: Derek Carr <decarr@redhat.com> * fix(auth): address gator re-review findings on workspace authorization - Fix TUI unconditionally setting providers_v2_enabled after provider refresh; read the actual gateway setting via GetGatewayConfig at startup instead - Fix SQLite json_extract with dotted label keys (e.g. example.com/env) by quoting the key in the JSON path - Add authed_request wrappers to upstream OCI identity tests that were missing a principal after rebase - Add test proving GetGatewayConfig is accessible without Platform Admin - Add test for dotted/prefixed Kubernetes-style label key filtering Signed-off-by: Derek Carr <decarr@redhat.com> * fix(auth): address second gator re-review findings - Loosen GetGatewayConfig from platform_admin to scope-only so workspace users can discover providers_v2_enabled during sandbox creation with inferred-provider commands; update proto descriptor, descriptor validation, and RFC 0011 access table - Add validate_label_selector to handle_list_workspaces and escape single quotes in SQLite json_extract interpolation (CWE-89 defense-in-depth) - Re-fetch providers_v2_enabled after TUI gateway switch so the new gateway's capability is reflected - Add e2e test for workspace user with inferred-provider command - Add persistence test for adversarial label keys with SQL injection attempts - Add handler test for invalid label selector rejection in ListWorkspaces Signed-off-by: Derek Carr <decarr@redhat.com> * fix(auth): address third gator review findings - Cap label selector pairs at 64 (CWE-400) to bound SQLite dynamic SQL - Add SCOPE_ONLY_METHODS allowlist for scope-without-role RPCs (CWE-863) - Normalize ID-based data-plane handlers to return NOT_FOUND for unauthorized sandboxes, closing the cross-workspace oracle (CWE-203) - Fix TUI provider profile cache lookup key mismatch for legacy providers with empty profile_workspace - Add whoami to CLI skill reference command tree - Update TUI skill doc with workspace, provider, and settings coverage - Document scope/workspace orthogonality on GetGatewayConfig proto Signed-off-by: Derek Carr <decarr@redhat.com> * fix(auth): extend CWE-203 normalization to policy.rs sandbox handlers GetSandboxConfig and GetSandboxLogs in policy.rs had the same fetch-before-authorize pattern that leaked cross-workspace sandbox existence. Promote fetch_and_authorize_sandbox to pub(super) and use it from both sandbox.rs and policy.rs handlers. Signed-off-by: Derek Carr <decarr@redhat.com> * test(auth): update assertions for CWE-203 sandbox ID normalization Cross-workspace sandbox access via ID-based handlers now returns NOT_FOUND instead of PERMISSION_DENIED to prevent existence inference. Update the unit test and OIDC e2e assertion to match. Signed-off-by: Derek Carr <decarr@redhat.com> * fix(auth): narrow CWE-203 error mapping and correct whoami output formats Only remap PERMISSION_DENIED to NOT_FOUND in fetch_and_authorize_sandbox and RevokeSshSession, letting INTERNAL and UNAUTHENTICATED propagate as-is. Fix whoami --output format values in cli-reference.md to match the actual CLI (table/json/yaml, not text/json). Signed-off-by: Derek Carr <decarr@redhat.com> * fix(ci): share network namespace with Keycloak in containerized CI In GitHub Actions job containers, Docker port publishing lands on the host, not inside the job container. Detect this environment and attach Keycloak to the job container's network namespace instead, with hardened defaults (cap-drop ALL, no-new-privileges, loopback-only listener). feat(telemetry): add build-time option to compile out telemetry (#1845)
* feat(telemetry): add build-time option to compile out telemetry Gate anonymous telemetry emission behind a default-on `telemetry` Cargo feature in openshell-core. The data model (enums, validation, emit_*/enabled* signatures) stays always-compiled, while the endpoint, HTTP client, queue, and emission code are feature-gated. With the feature off, enabled() returns false and emit_* are no-ops, so dependent crates compile unchanged and no telemetry endpoint, HTTP client, or emission code is included in the binary. chrono and reqwest become optional dependencies of openshell-core, dropped from its dependency graph when telemetry is disabled. Thread the switch through the workspace: every crate depends on openshell-core with default-features = false, and the default-on `telemetry` passthrough lives on the binary crates that emit or collect telemetry (openshell-server, openshell-sandbox, openshell-driver-vm). In-process drivers inherit it via resolver v2 feature unification. Build a telemetry-free binary with, e.g.: cargo build --release -p openshell-server --no-default-features The runtime OPENSHELL_TELEMETRY_ENABLED switch is unchanged for default builds. Signed-off-by: Russell Bryant <russell.bryant@gmail.com> * ci(telemetry): guard that telemetry can be compiled out Add tasks/scripts/verify-telemetry-compiled-out.sh, which inspects a built binary for telemetry markers (the telemetry endpoint host and client ID) that exist only when emission code is compiled in. The rust:verify:telemetry-off mise task builds the gateway with default features (positive control: markers must be present, so the absent checks can never be silently vacuous) and with --no-default-features (markers must be absent), and checks the --no-default-features sandbox binary as well. Wire the task into the Rust branch-checks job so a regression that reintroduces telemetry code into a --no-default-features build fails CI. feat(server): declare gRPC auth (mode + scope + role) at the handler, enforce at the router (#1596)
* feat(server): per-handler gRPC auth annotations Move scope, role, and auth-mode metadata to the handler definition site via #[rpc_authz] + #[rpc_auth] proc macros. The previously hand-maintained SCOPED_METHODS, ADMIN_METHODS, UNAUTHENTICATED_METHODS, and ALLOWED_SANDBOX_METHODS tables are now generated from per-method annotations on the tonic service impls, with canonical gRPC paths derived from the service name and method name. Adds a new openshell-server-macros proc-macro crate, an aggregator in auth/method_authz.rs, and an exhaustiveness test that decodes the protobuf FileDescriptorSet (now emitted by openshell-core/build.rs) and verifies every RPC has an annotation. Signed-off-by: Mrunal Patel <mrunalp@gmail.com> * refactor(server): rename `sandbox-secret` auth mode to `sandbox` PR #1404 replaced the shared sandbox secret with per-sandbox gateway-minted JWTs. A handler marked `sandbox` now authenticates as a specific `Principal::Sandbox`, not as a holder of a shared credential. Rename `auth = "sandbox-secret"` to `auth = "sandbox"` and `AuthMode::SandboxSecret` to `AuthMode::Sandbox` so the name matches the post-#1404 identity model. Signed-off-by: Mrunal Patel <mrunalp@gmail.com> * fix(server): enforce per-handler AuthMode at the router Addresses review feedback on the per-handler auth-annotation work. - Router-level enforcement of #[rpc_auth] auth mode (HIGH). The previous router only checked is_sandbox_callable() for Principal::Sandbox; user principals still flowed into AuthzPolicy::check() and bypassed the per-handler declaration. A user with `openshell:all` could therefore reach `sandbox`-only handlers like GetSandboxProviderEnvironment, ReportPolicyStatus, PushSandboxLogs, and SubmitPolicyAnalysis even though their annotations said sandbox-only. Adds an is_user_callable() predicate and rejects User principals at the router for `sandbox` / `unauthenticated` methods. - Proc macro now errors on duplicate keys in #[rpc_auth(...)] (LOW). A second `auth`, `scope`, or `role` previously silently overwrote the first value; now it fails to compile. - Regression tests: a unit test for is_user_callable() and a router test that proves a user with admin role + openshell:all cannot reach the nine sandbox-only handlers. Signed-off-by: Mrunal Patel <mrunalp@gmail.com> * docs(server): finish renaming sandbox-secret to sandbox in method_authz doc comments Signed-off-by: Mrunal Patel <mrunalp@gmail.com> * refactor(server-macros): drop standalone `rpc_auth` stub The stub was a safety net that fired only when a method had `#[rpc_auth(...)]` without an enclosing `#[rpc_authz]`. Triggering it required `rpc_auth` to be imported, which is why both call sites carried `#[allow(unused_imports)] use openshell_server_macros::{rpc_auth, rpc_authz};`. Drop the stub and the unused-import workaround. A missing `#[rpc_authz]` now surfaces as rustc's standard "cannot find attribute `rpc_auth` in this scope" — clear enough, and one fewer import + lint exception. Addresses review comment on PR #1596. Signed-off-by: Mrunal Patel <mrunalp@gmail.com> * refactor(server-macros): emit fixed `AUTH_METADATA` const per service The previous trait-derived const name turned `OpenShell` into `OPEN_SHELL_AUTH_METADATA`, splitting the project name across an underscore. Each impl already lives in its own module (`crate::grpc::`, `crate::inference::`), so the module path is enough to disambiguate between services — a fixed `AUTH_METADATA` name reads more naturally. Aggregator in `auth/method_authz.rs` now references `crate::grpc::AUTH_METADATA` and `crate::inference::AUTH_METADATA` directly. Addresses review comment on PR #1596. Signed-off-by: Mrunal Patel <mrunalp@gmail.com> * docs(server-macros): fix typo in AUTH_METADATA_CONST doc comment OpenShell is one word; reference name in the doc should be OPENSHELL_AUTH_METADATA, not OPEN_SHELL_AUTH_METADATA. refactor(sandbox,driver-vm): Start moving to rustix (esp over libc unsafe) (#1505)
In the Rust ecosystem there's largely three ways to do system calls: - raw libc - nix - rustix Of the three, libc is almost all `unsafe` and really 95% of use cases should be either nix or rustix. nix is the original one, but after having looked at the code of both, I think rustix is just better designed and organized. It's also reached 1.0, whereas nix is still making semver-breaking changes (in fact we're behind here in this project). Now in practice, we have both *transitively* in the depchain already, and that's true for quite a lot of projects. But I think rustix is better, so let's add rustix as a workspace dependency (process feature) and migrate a few use cases to it - it's especially better than the raw libc which is suprisingly widespread. If we agree to do this, then many other calls can be ported. Signed-off-by: Colin Walters <walters@verbum.org> |

feat(gateway): add TOML configuration file (RFC 0003) (#1317)
* feat(gateway): add TOML configuration file (RFC 0003)
Introduces an opt-in --config / OPENSHELL_GATEWAY_CONFIG flag that loads a
TOML file with gateway-wide settings and per-driver tables. Source
precedence is CLI > env > file > built-in default, implemented via clap's
ValueSource so existing flags and env vars keep their priority.
Driver crates (kubernetes, docker, podman, vm) now derive Deserialize on
their config structs. SupervisorSideloadMethod gains Deserialize with
kebab-case rename. A per-driver inheritance allowlist on the loader side
overlays [openshell.gateway] shared defaults (default_image,
supervisor_image, image_pull_policy, guest_tls_*, ssh_handshake_skew_secs,
client_tls_secret_name, host_gateway_ip, enable_user_namespaces) onto
each [openshell.drivers.<name>] table before deserialization.
The Helm chart renders a new gateway-config ConfigMap and mounts it at
/etc/openshell/gateway.toml. The migrated OPENSHELL_* env entries are
dropped from the StatefulSet — only the Secret-backed
OPENSHELL_SSH_HANDSHAKE_SECRET remains. database_url stays on --db-url.
Adds examples/gateway/gateway.example.toml and updates architecture/gateway.md
with the source precedence and inheritance rules.
* docs(gateway): drop ssh_handshake_skew_secs and ssh_handshake_secret from examples
Both fields are scheduled for removal. Remove the example values and the
env-only note so the gateway.toml example and the architecture doc stop
recommending settings that will not exist much longer.
* docs(rfc): correct OPENSHELL_CONFIG to OPENSHELL_GATEWAY_CONFIG in RFC 0003
* docs(gateway): add per-driver TOML example configurations
Adds focused single-driver examples next to the comprehensive
gateway.example.toml: kubernetes, docker, podman, and microvm. Each one
demonstrates the realistic settings for that driver plus how shared
[openshell.gateway] defaults inherit into the driver table.
A new unit test (`checked_in_examples_parse`) loads every example through
the config_file loader so schema drift fails CI rather than silently
shipping a broken example.
* refactor(gateway): drop image_pull_policy from shared inheritance
Kubernetes and Podman use mutually-incompatible vocabularies for the same
TOML key:
- Kubernetes: `Always | IfNotPresent | Never` (free-form string passed
verbatim to the K8s API).
- Podman: `always | missing | never | newer` (strict lowercase enum
deserialised into `ImagePullPolicy`).
No value means the same thing in both drivers. Sharing the key at
`[openshell.gateway]` scope and inheriting it into every active driver's
table meant any value safe for one driver was either wrong or silently
dropped for the other (`IfNotPresent` → `ImagePullPolicy::Missing` after
`.unwrap_or_default()`). Operators run one driver per gateway, so the
"shared default" never pays for itself.
Make `image_pull_policy` driver-local:
- Remove the field from `GatewayFileSection` and from
`inheritable_keys()` for both Kubernetes and Podman.
- Drop the file→`RunArgs` merge for the gateway-scope key.
- Stop unconditionally clobbering the driver value with
`config.sandbox_image_pull_policy` in the runtime wiring — only apply
the CLI/env override when it was set (and, for Podman, only when it
parses into the lowercase enum).
- Move the key under `[openshell.drivers.kubernetes]` and
`[openshell.drivers.podman]` in every example, the RFC, the
architecture doc, and the Helm-rendered gateway ConfigMap.
The supervisor pull policy follows the same shape: it is K8s-only and
moves into `[openshell.drivers.kubernetes]` alongside `image_pull_policy`
in the Helm template.
* fix(gateway): address review feedback on TOML configuration
Resolves the P1 and P2 issues raised in PR #1317:
- Helm gateway ConfigMap moves `grpc_endpoint` under
`[openshell.drivers.kubernetes]` so the default install no longer fails
the gateway's `deny_unknown_fields` schema check.
- `kubernetes_config_from_file` and `podman_config_from_file` only let
the gateway-wide CLI/env `grpc_endpoint` overwrite the driver-table
value when it was actually supplied, preserving file-only configs.
- Kubernetes driver default `image_pull_policy` is now empty (was Podman
vocabulary "missing"), so default deployments let the Kubernetes API
apply its own policy instead of being rejected.
- New `disable_tls` gateway field plumbs `.Values.server.disableTls`
through the TOML ConfigMap instead of relying on env vars dropped from
the StatefulSet.
- StatefulSet pod template now carries a `checksum/gateway-config`
annotation so `helm upgrade` rolls pods when the ConfigMap changes.
- Auxiliary listener resolution preserves the full `SocketAddr` from
`health_bind_address` / `metrics_bind_address`, so a loopback-pinned
health port is not silently relocated onto the public bind address.
- `ssh_session_ttl_secs` from the file is now applied to `Config` (it
was previously accepted by the loader but never read).
New regression coverage: cli-level merge tests for the new fields plus
helm-unittest assertions for the ConfigMap shape, checksum annotation,
and `disable_tls` rendering.
* docs(gateway): consolidate gateway TOML examples into docs reference
Replaces the per-driver example files under examples/gateway/ with a
single published reference page at docs/reference/gateway-config.mdx
covering source precedence, layout, the full example, and the four
per-driver examples (Kubernetes, Docker, Podman, microVM). Drew flagged
during PR #1317 review that the examples belong with the user-facing
docs rather than in a sibling examples/ directory.
The cross-references in architecture/gateway.md and RFC 0003 are updated
to point at the new docs page; the round-trip test in config_file.rs is
removed (schema coverage stays on the inline parses_full_example test
and per-field merge tests — doc-snippet drift belongs in a separate
docs-lint, not in a cross-tree Rust unit test).
* refactor(core): move DEFAULT_K8S_NAMESPACE into K8s driver
The constant is Kubernetes-specific (used only by KubernetesComputeConfig's
Default impl) and does not belong in openshell-core. Relocate it to the
driver crate that owns the K8s vocabulary; openshell-core retains only
truly cross-cutting defaults.
* refactor(core): move Podman bridge default into Podman driver
DEFAULT_NETWORK_NAME is Podman vocabulary, consumed only by the Podman
driver. Also drops the unused DEFAULT_IMAGE_PULL_POLICY constant.
* docs(auth): scrub remaining SSH handshake secret references
Sweeps the trailing mentions left after the rebase: the gateway
config-file module doc, the Helm gateway-config ConfigMap header,
the gateway-config.mdx env-only note, and the RPM systemd unit
comment for init-gateway-env.sh.
* docs(gateway): clarify OPENSHELL_GRPC_ENDPOINT applies to all drivers
The previous comment implied the callback endpoint was Kubernetes-only,
but the value is propagated to every compute driver (Kubernetes, Docker,
Podman, VM) and must be reachable from wherever the sandbox runs.
* refactor(gateway): move driver options into config (#1394)
Signed-off-by: Drew Newberry <anewberry@nvidia.com>
* fix(e2e): regenerate gateway config via TOML for docker + podman harnesses
The gateway CLI flags moved into TOML config tables in 560550d2 (#1394),
which made every existing e2e/with-{docker,podman}-gateway.sh invocation
fail with "unexpected argument '--sandbox-namespace'" (and a long tail
of similar driver-specific options) before the gateway could even bind.
Replace the obsolete CLI flags with a synthesized
`[openshell.drivers.<driver>]` table written to `${STATE_DIR}/gateway.toml`
and passed via the new `--config` flag. Only the gateway-wide flags
that survived 560550d2 (bind-address, port, drivers, db-url, tls-*,
disable-tls, log-level, health-port) stay on the command line.
Both scripts get a small `toml_string` helper to properly TOML-quote
the values (the previous `%q` printf format produced bash-escape, not
TOML-escape). The Docker harness also corrects two field names that
diverged from the driver schema: `docker_network_name` →
`network_name`, and the supervisor binary/image plumbing now reads
through to `supervisor_bin` / `supervisor_image` in the same table.
The Podman harness drops `--ssh-gateway-port` (deleted in 560550d2 —
gRPC + SSH are multiplexed on the same port now) and substitutes
`network_name` + `gateway_port` for the obsolete `--sandbox-namespace`
(which the Podman driver never had as a typed field).
* fix(core): swap bind-only 0.0.0.0 SSH gateway host for cluster URL host
CLI's resolve_ssh_gateway treated 0.0.0.0 as a loopback "keep as-is"
when the cluster URL was also loopback, so the SSH proxy connected to
0.0.0.0:port. The unspecified address is never a valid connect target
and is not present in any TLS cert SAN, which produced BadCertificate
TLS handshake failures during `openshell sandbox create -- ...` in
docker/podman e2e (e.g. bypass_detection).
Resolution: when the server returns 0.0.0.0 or :: as the gateway host
and both endpoints are loopback, fall back to the cluster URL's host
(which the CLI is already using to reach the gateway, so it must
resolve and match the cert).
* fix(e2e): repair podman harness on macOS
Podman 5.x with the applehv/libkrun provider no longer creates the legacy
~/.local/share/containers/podman/machine/podman.sock symlink, and
`podman system service` is a Linux-only subcommand — the macOS client
delegates the API service to the VM. Both assumptions in the harness
were stale, so the script tried to start a temporary service that podman
rejected with "unknown flag: --time".
- Discover the macOS socket via `podman machine inspect` instead of the
hardcoded path.
- On Darwin, fail fast with a "start podman machine" message rather than
attempting the Linux-only `podman system service` fallback.
- Write socket_path into [openshell.drivers.podman] so the in-process
driver picks up the discovered socket; the driver reads TOML only
after the config refactor (560550d2), so OPENSHELL_PODMAN_SOCKET alone
was no longer enough.
* fix(server): use clone_from for TLS client CA assignment
clippy 1.95.0 rejects assigning the result of `Clone::clone()` to an
existing variable under `-D warnings` (`assigning_clones`). Switch to
`clone_from(&...)` to satisfy the lint and avoid the redundant
allocation.
