feat(sandbox): write agent output to the container log (#4005)
Since #2726 the canonical main process's stdout and stderr are captured in pipes that feed only the in-memory replay buffer used by sandbox connect. Agent output therefore never reaches the container's own stdout and stderr, so it is missing from kubectl logs, docker logs, and podman logs and from anything that collects container logs. Before #2726 the entrypoint inherited the container's descriptors and its output appeared there. Copy the main process's output to the launcher's stdout and stderr in addition to the replay buffer, restoring the earlier behavior: - Output is copied byte for byte to the matching stream from a forwarder thread per stream, after it is published to the replay buffer. When the container runtime falls behind on a stream, that stream's reader waits instead of dropping output, so backpressure reaches the agent as it did with inherited descriptors, while the other stream and attachments keep receiving output. - Before the main process's exit is published, the output readers finish and queued output is drained to the container log, so an agent's final lines are not lost at shutdown. A 30 second deadline covers both; when it expires, readers waiting on the container log are released and drain the pipes into the replay buffer only, so a stalled container log cannot block exit reporting. - PTY-mode processes are not copied. The terminal stream carries escape sequences and echoed input, and terminal commands never reached the container log before #2726. - Exec, SSH, and SFTP sessions are not copied. Launcher log lines keep their existing format and remain in the container's stderr. They are written as whole lines, and a newline is inserted first when the agent left stderr mid-line, so launcher and agent lines do not merge. The Docker and VM drivers appended the tail of the workload's output to failure messages: Docker the workload container's log, and the VM driver the guest console, which carries the launcher's stdout and stderr. Those messages land in the sandbox's Ready condition and in platform events that the gateway republishes to the sandbox event stream. With agent output in that log, those messages would carry arbitrary agent output, including anything sensitive the agent prints, into gateway status and events. The supervisor starts its health endpoint only after the agent starts, so every Docker failure path could include agent output, and the VM driver reports one whenever the VM or host supervisor exits. Forward only the supervisor's log tail, matching the Podman driver, which reads the workload log solely to match fixed launcher markers and never forwards raw workload output. The workload's output remains available through docker logs and the VM's rootfs-console.log. Document where main process output appears in the logging docs and the cluster debugging skill. fix(vm): relocate per-sandbox Unix sockets to /tmp to fit macOS sun_path (#3544)
The VM driver bound control.sock and ssh.sock inside the per-sandbox state directory, which defaults to $HOME/.local/state/openshell/vm-driver/sandboxes/<uuid>/. On macOS the sun_path field of sockaddr_un holds 104 bytes, so a normal home directory plus the sandbox UUID already pushes the socket path past the limit and bind fails with "path too long". Bind both sockets under a short driver-owned namespace instead: /tmp/os-<uid>-<128-bit-hex>/<sandbox-id>/. The worst case with a UUID sandbox id is 101 bytes. Security properties of the new location: - The root is created with mkdir mode 0700 and a random 128-bit name, retrying on EEXIST, so a local user cannot pre-create the path to block the driver or plant a symlink. - The root's directory FD is held for the driver lifetime. Per-sandbox leaves are created and removed with mkdirat/unlinkat relative to that FD, so there is no path re-resolution between check and mutation. - Leaf creation rejects any sandbox id whose socket path would still exceed sun_path, returning a clear error instead of a bind failure. The driver removes the whole root on shutdown so restarts do not accumulate orphaned roots in /tmp. VM children are kill_on_drop, so no socket is live at that point. Restore-on-restart goes through the normal launch path and recreates leaves under the new root. Signed-off-by: Florent Benoit <fbenoit@redhat.com> |

fix(vm): unpack registry images correctly and validate prepared disks (#3524)
* fix(vm): unpack registry images correctly and validate prepared disks The registry image-prep path expected `umoci raw unpack` to produce a bundle-style rootfs/ subdirectory, but it extracts the image filesystem directly into the target. Every registry prep therefore failed after a successful unpack. Guest init exit codes do not survive the libkrun boundary, so the failure looked like success and the broken disk was cached, making every later sandbox for that image fail with "prepared image disk missing /image-rootfs". VM E2E started hitting this after the bootstrap image moved to nvcr.io/nvidia/base/ubuntu:24.04: `--from base` no longer matches the bootstrap image, so it now goes through registry prep. - Accept umoci's direct extraction layout in the guest prep script. - Build the image rootfs under a partial directory and rename it to /image-rootfs only after every prep step succeeds. - Check the prepared disk for /image-rootfs before caching it. On failure, leave the cache untouched and report the prep console tail. - Size the prep disk to hold the payload and the unpacked rootfs at the same time. The community base image needs 1.40 GB + 3.32 GB, which did not fit in the old payload*3 + 512 MiB. Fixes #2358 Co-authored-by: s2cube <26961336+s2cube@users.noreply.github.com> Signed-off-by: Emilien Macchi <emacchi@redhat.com> * test(e2e): run tool-dependent VM tests from the community base image The host_gateway_alias and vm_corporate_proxy workloads run curl and python3. The VM driver now defaults to nvcr.io/nvidia/base/ubuntu:24.04, which ships neither, so these tests fail in VM E2E with "command not found". Request the community base image explicitly with `--from base`. Docker, Podman, and Kubernetes E2E already default to that image, so their behavior is unchanged. chore(vm): bump libkrun to v1.19.4 and libkrunfw to v5.6.1 (#3451)
The libkrun and libkrunfw projects moved from the containers/ GitHub org to libkrun/. Update all clone URLs and version pins accordingly. libkrun v1.19.4 introduces krun_add_virtiofs4 with a permissions semantics parameter, enabling correct file ownership mapping on host-to-guest bind mounts — required for issue #2585. - libkrun: v1.17.4 → v1.19.4 (libkrun/libkrun) - libkrunfw: 463f717b → v5.6.1 (libkrun/libkrunfw) - Centralise LIBKRUN_REF in pins.env instead of hardcoding in each build script - Source pins.env in the macOS build script for consistency with the Linux build script - Remove the init/init make target step — since libkrun/libkrun@05c4eb7 the init blob moved into the init_blob crate and is built by cargo Ref: https://github.com/NVIDIA/OpenShell/issues/2585 Signed-off-by: Florent Benoit <fbenoit@redhat.com> |

feat(sandbox): support rootfs tar as --from source for VM driver (#2863)
* feat(sandbox): support rootfs tar as --from source for VM driver Accept flat rootfs tar archives (.tar, .tar.gz, .tgz) via the --from flag for VM-backed gateways. The CLI detects the archive extension, validates that the gateway uses the VM compute driver, and passes the tar path through driver_config. The VM driver copies the tar into its staging area and feeds it into the existing rootfs extraction and ext4 disk creation pipeline, skipping the container image pull/export steps. Closes #2175 Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(sandbox): validate rootfs tar path at the VM driver boundary The rootfs_tar_path field in driver_config was passed from the API caller directly to tokio::fs::copy without validation. An authenticated user bypassing the CLI could supply arbitrary host paths (e.g. /dev/zero for disk exhaustion, or readable host files for data exfiltration). Introduce a trusted staging directory that the VM driver creates on startup and advertises via GetCapabilities. The CLI now copies the tar into the staging directory before creating the sandbox, and the driver validates that the received path is a regular file inside the staging root and within a configurable size limit (default 10 GiB) before any I/O. New VmDriverConfig options: - rootfs_tar_staging_dir: override the staging directory (default: <state_dir>/rootfs-tar-staging) - rootfs_tar_max_bytes: override the size limit (default: 10 GiB) Addresses GATOR-28b5152e-01. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(sandbox): request-scoped staging, size pre-check, and cleanup for rootfs tar Tighten the rootfs tar staging flow to address the remaining GATOR-01 obligations: - Request-scoped staging: the CLI creates a unique per-request subdirectory (req-<pid>) under the staging root instead of placing files directly in the shared directory. The driver enforces that the tar path is at depth 2 (staging_root/<subdir>/<file>), preventing cross-request path selection. - Size pre-check: the driver advertises rootfs_tar_max_bytes via GetCapabilities. The CLI reads this limit and rejects oversized files before copying, avoiding disk exhaustion in the staging directory. - Cleanup: the driver removes the request staging subdirectory after consuming the tar (on cache hit, copy success, or copy failure), ensuring staged data does not persist beyond the request. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(vm): restore rootfs-tar sandboxes from persisted image identity On restore or restart, the one-shot staged tar archive has already been cleaned up. Reading the persisted image identity from the sandbox state directory and resolving the cached disk path directly avoids re-accessing the deleted staging path. Addresses GATOR-168b9210-01. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(cli): use random staging dirs and enforce byte limit during rootfs tar copy Replace PID-based request staging directories with tempfile-generated random names to prevent collisions and make paths unpredictable. Replace bare tokio::fs::copy with a streaming copy loop that enforces the advertised max_bytes limit during transfer, closing the TOCTOU gap between the pre-copy size check and the actual copy. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@nvidia.com> Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(sandbox): issue rootfs tar staging slots from the gateway A caller could name any host path in `driver_config.vm.rootfs_tar_path`, which the privileged VM driver then read. The CLI-side locality check did not apply to direct API requests. The gateway now owns staging. `BeginRootfsTarStaging` allocates a request-scoped directory under the driver-advertised staging root and returns an opaque single-use token; `CreateSandbox` carries the token, and the gateway substitutes the path it allocated before dispatching to the driver. `template.driver_config.<driver>.rootfs_tar_path` is rejected outright in request validation, so a caller-supplied path never reaches privileged I/O. Tokens are bound to the issuing workspace and subject, consumed once, and expire after 30 minutes. Outstanding slots are capped per caller and overall, so one caller can neither exhaust the staging filesystem nor starve others. An RAII guard reclaims the directory on every failure path after consumption, and an age-gated sweep runs at startup and on each reconcile pass for directories whose driver died before its own cleanup. The token is stripped from the public sandbox before persistence: the stored copy is returned verbatim by GetSandbox, ListSandboxes and WatchSandbox to every member of the workspace. Also fixes two defects this exposed: - The CLI wrote `rootfs_tar_path` at the top level of `driver_config`, but the gateway forwards only `driver_config.<driver_name>`, silently dropping unmatched keys. The archive never reached the VM driver, so the documented `--from ./rootfs.tar` flow did not work at all. Config is now nested under `vm` and deep-merged, so a caller's existing VM settings survive instead of being clobbered by a shallow extend. - Staging previously required `GetGatewayInfo`, which is restricted to `platform_admin`, making the feature unusable for ordinary users on any RBAC-enabled gateway. The new RPC matches CreateSandbox at `sandbox:write` / `workspace_role: user`. `compute_driver.proto` is unchanged; the gateway reads the staging root from the capabilities it already stores. Refs #2175 Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(vm): derive rootfs tar cache identity from archive contents The prepared-disk cache key combined the archive's full path with an mtime truncated to seconds, then mapped punctuation to `-`. Distinct paths such as `/tmp/a/b.tar` and `/tmp/a-b.tar` collapsed onto the same key and reused each other's disk, a rewrite within the same second kept stale contents, and a long path could exceed filesystem component limits. Identity is now a SHA-256 of the archive contents. This is also what makes the cache work at all now that the gateway allocates a fresh staging directory per request: a path-derived key would miss on every create. The archive is hashed, the cache checked, and only on a miss copied — so a hit skips writing a multi-gigabyte file. The copy is hashed as it is written and rejected if the digest differs from the first pass, which closes the window where the source changes during staging rather than approximating it with a re-stat. Refs #2175 Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(vm): decompress gzip rootfs tar archives during staging `--from` accepts `.tar.gz` and `.tgz`, but the driver staged whatever bytes it was given and the guest image-prep VM extracts the staged file with a plain `tar -xpf`. Compressed sources therefore depended on the guest tar auto-detecting gzip, and the prepared disk was sized from the compressed length, which is far too small for the expanded rootfs. Staging now detects gzip from the archive's magic bytes -- the driver only ever sees a gateway-issued staging path, never the caller's file name -- and writes an uncompressed tar. The digest still covers the source bytes, so the "archive changed while staging" check is unaffected, and expansion is bounded by `rootfs_tar_max_bytes` so a compression bomb cannot fill the host disk. `extract_rootfs_archive_to` sniffs gzip as well, so the host-side extraction path matches. Adds unit coverage for gzip staging, bounded expansion, and gzip extraction, plus an e2e sandbox created from a gzip-compressed export. refactor(otel): unify compute driver tracing (#2995)
Centralize compute-driver RPC descriptors, stream instrumentation, provider routing, and standalone installation in openshell-otel. Use typed RPC constants so gateway and in-process driver paths cannot panic on unknown operation strings or repeat runtime method parsing. Emit semantic-convention rpc.service and rpc.method attributes, preserve trace context and resource identity across deployment modes, and route both RPC boundary and backend crate spans to each selected driver provider. Leave consumer-dropped watch spans unset while recording observed terminal status, and avoid reboxing untraced external-driver streams. Derive each driver tracing identity from Cargo package and crate metadata and attach its descriptor to the compute-driver registration, keeping provider selection and target routing tied to the registered implementation. Share tracing setup and round-trip test support across Docker, Podman, Kubernetes, and VM, and update the gateway tracing documentation. Signed-off-by: Kris Hicks <khicks@nvidia.com> |

feat(vm): support corporate HTTP forward proxy egress for microVM sandboxes (#3090)
* feat(vm): support corporate HTTP forward proxy egress for microVM sandboxes The corporate forward proxy machinery from #1792 is driver-agnostic and already merged: openshell-supervisor-network implements CONNECT chaining, NO_PROXY matching, credentials, https:// proxies and corporate CA trust, and openshell-sandbox exposes it as six argv-only flags. Podman gained the driver half in #2245/#2512 and Kubernetes in #2633; the VM driver had none of it, so VM sandboxes on proxy-only networks could not reach any destination requiring the proxy even when policy allowed it. The blocking piece was not proxy logic but delivery: the VM guest init script runs as PID 1 and execs a fixed supervisor command line, and libkrun's krun_set_exec receives an empty argv, so there was no channel for driver-owned supervisor arguments. The supervisor's proxy flags deliberately have no environment fallback, and build_guest_environment merges user-supplied environment, so the guest env is not a safe transport either. Add a driver-authored argument file, mirroring the existing init.d manifest: the driver writes /opt/openshell/supervisor-args into the overlay upperdir on every launch and the guest reads it verbatim, one argument per line, appending it to every supervisor exec. It is written even when empty, which is what makes the channel unforgeable -- the upperdir always shadows the read-only image layer, so an image can neither supply its own arguments nor disable the operator's by omitting the file. Because both launch backends exec the same init script, this covers libkrun and QEMU without touching either. A microVM has no bind mounts or container secrets, so the credential and CA bundle are staged into the per-sandbox overlay the way the gateway JWT already is: credential root-only at 0600, CA at 0644, both rewritten every launch so a removed setting clears prior material, and both deleted with the sandbox state directory. This places the credential at rest in the overlay image on the gateway host, which differs from the Podman secret model and is documented as an explicit security consideration. Validation is fail-closed and shared: a new openshell_core::driver_utils::validate_upstream_proxy_settings holds the pairing rules the Podman driver established, and both the gateway and the driver call it so an invalid table names the offending key instead of surfacing as an opaque driver-readiness timeout. Guest egress leaves through gvproxy, so a proxy on the gateway host's loopback is reachable only through host.openshell.internal; the guest to gateway callback is unaffected. Closes #3088 Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(vm): bound the proxy CA read and scope the host-loopback recipe Two review findings on the corporate forward proxy support for microVM sandboxes. The driver read the operator's proxy_ca_bundle with an unbounded fs::read and accepted it on a substring match for the PEM BEGIN CERTIFICATE marker. A special file such as /dev/zero therefore grew driver memory without bound on every authorized sandbox create, and a PEM block holding invalid DER passed the host check but contributes no trust anchor in the guest, so every supervisor would fail after boot with an error attributed to the sandbox rather than to the setting. Move the read into openshell-core as read_upstream_proxy_ca_bundle_file: it reuses the credential reader's bounded-read path (non-regular files rejected on fstat, size capped, read bounded even if the file grows), then requires at least one anchor that RootCertStore::add_parsable_certificates accepts. The supervisor's own reader now delegates to it, so host acceptance and guest acceptance are the same function and cannot drift. The published host-loopback recipe was written for libkrun only. gvproxy NATs host.openshell.internal to the gateway host's 127.0.0.1, but GPU sandboxes run on the QEMU/TAP backend where that name resolves to the TAP host address and the driver's own nftables input chain accepts only the gateway port from the guest — no proxy on the gateway host is reachable there at any bind address, so an operator following the generic recipe lost all proxy-required egress while configuration validation succeeded. Scope the recipe to libkrun in every reference and reject a gateway-host proxy URL when a launch plan resolves to QEMU, naming the reason, instead of booting a sandbox whose policy-approved CONNECTs all time out. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(vm): match the QEMU proxy preflight to the selected TAP host The gateway-host proxy guard added for the QEMU/TAP backend classified the wrong set of addresses in both directions. It ran at the top of configure_qemu_launch_plan, before the subnet allocation that settles plan.host_ip, so it could not compare against the address the guest actually reaches the host on. An operator pointing https_proxy at the sandbox's own TAP host address, such as 10.0.128.1, passed the check, and the driver's nftables input chain — which accepts only the gateway port from the guest — then dropped every policy-approved CONNECT, which is exactly the silent timeout the guard exists to prevent. In the other direction it rejected 192.168.127.254 unconditionally. That address is special only to libkrun/gvproxy; on QEMU/TAP it is an ordinary address that may be routable through the guest's masqueraded egress, so the guard refused a working configuration. Run the check after the launch plan's network allocation, on both the freshly-allocated and already-complete paths, and compare IP literals with that sandbox's selected TAP host. Loopback literals, localhost, and the documented host aliases that write_host_gateway_aliases seeds to the TAP host still classify as the gateway host, and the failure names the address. The gvproxy host-loopback constant returns to being a documentation anchor. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> --------- Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> |

feat(build): add defaults-without-telemetry feature alias (#2843)
* feat(build): add defaults-without-telemetry feature alias Cargo cannot subtract a single default feature, so compiling telemetry out meant `--no-default-features` plus a hand-maintained keep-list of the crate's other defaults. That keep-list was already wrong for operators: telemetry is the only default on openshell-server and openshell-driver-vm, but openshell-sandbox also defaults to `bundled-ca-roots`, so a bare `--no-default-features` silently swapped the supervisor onto the platform trust store. Add a `defaults-without-telemetry` alias to each of the three telemetry- carrying binary crates, enumerating every default except `telemetry`. Telemetry-free builds become `--no-default-features --features defaults-without-telemetry` and stay correct as the default set grows. The alias is a keep-list, not a switch. Enabling it on top of the defaults would otherwise produce a telemetry-on binary that reads as telemetry-free, so each crate root carries a `compile_error!` for the `telemetry` + `defaults-without-telemetry` combination. Add `rust:verify:defaults-without-telemetry` to guard both properties: each alias still equals its crate's defaults minus `telemetry`, and the mutual-exclusion error is wired up. The additive-misuse check matches on the `compile_error!` text rather than a nonzero exit code so it cannot pass vacuously on hosts where openshell-driver-vm fails to build for unrelated reasons. `rust:verify:telemetry-off` now builds through the alias. feat(kubernetes): export driver traces over OTLP (#2958)
Mirror the VM, Podman, and Docker driver tracing setup for Kubernetes. Export standalone driver spans through OTLP/gRPC as the distinct openshell-driver-kubernetes service, preserve gateway trace context, record lifecycle operations and gRPC failures, and flush spans on shutdown. Kubernetes currently runs in-process when selected as a built-in gateway driver. Use the temporary server-boundary shim shared with Podman and Docker so traces retain the shape they will have when Kubernetes moves to a separate process. Move the common ComputeDriver RPC tracing layer into openshell-otel to keep all drivers aligned. Propagate the active W3C context through the controller-reserved Sandbox annotation and enable Agent Sandbox OTLP export in the local k3s workflow. This connects asynchronous controller reconciliation spans to the originating OpenShell create trace. Expose gateway OTLP configuration through Helm and add an Aspire collector to the local k3s workflow. Extend helm:k3s:forward with OTLP ingest and trace UI forwarding for Kubernetes and local container gateway development. Signed-off-by: Kris Hicks <khicks@nvidia.com> |

feat(podman): export driver traces over OTLP (#2782)
Mirror the VM driver tracing setup for Podman. Export standalone driver spans through OTLP/gRPC as the distinct openshell-driver-podman service, propagate W3C context across ComputeDriver RPCs, record bounded RPC names and failures, and flush buffered spans during graceful shutdown. Podman still runs in-process when selected as a built-in gateway driver. Add a temporary tracing shim that partitions gateway and Podman spans by target into separate tracer providers while preserving their shared trace and parentage. The shim also emits the same ComputeDriver server boundary that the tonic layer emits out of process, keeping the observable trace shape stable when Podman is eventually extracted. Trace container create preparation, image and storage setup, lifecycle operations, and cleanup. Document the service boundary and cover it with isolated and repeated tracing tests. feat(k8s): add namespace-per-workspace support (RFC 0011 Phase 3) (#2656)
* feat(k8s): add namespace-per-workspace support (RFC 0011 Phase 3) Implement three workspace namespace modes for the Kubernetes compute driver: shared (default, preserves current single-namespace behavior), managed (auto-creates/deletes namespaces per workspace), and operator (pre-provisioned namespaces with dynamic discovery via label selector or drop-in allowlist file). Key changes: - WorkspaceMode enum and namespace resolution in driver config - Managed namespace lifecycle with ServiceAccount and OpenShift SCC annotation propagation - Cluster-wide sandbox CR watchers for managed/operator modes - NamespaceValidator (Exact/Prefix/Allowlist) for SA token auth - Workspace-aware credential secret storage - Helm ClusterRole for multi-namespace RBAC - Gateway config, architecture, and reference docs Signed-off-by: Derek Carr <decarr@redhat.com> * test(k8s): add e2e tests for workspace namespace modes Add end-to-end tests for managed and operator workspace modes introduced in RFC 0011 Phase 3. The managed mode tests verify namespace creation with correct labels, ServiceAccount provisioning, sandbox CR placement, and namespace survival with remaining sandboxes. The operator mode tests verify rejection of unlabeled and nonexistent namespaces. The positive operator path (sandbox in labeled namespace) is known to fail due to an RBAC gap and will be addressed separately. Also fixes Helm 4 compatibility: move SPDX license headers inside conditional guards in 8 chart templates to prevent empty comment-only documents, and fix a trailing whitespace trimmer in clusterrole.yaml that concatenated the license header with apiVersion. Adds cleanup sweep in with-kube-gateway.sh to remove managed and operator namespaces before Helm uninstall, and mise tasks for running each mode independently. Signed-off-by: Derek Carr <decarr@redhat.com> * feat(k8s): add operator namespace label watcher Spawn a background kube::runtime::watcher in the K8s driver that watches namespaces matching the configured label selector and populates the OperatorNamespaceAllowlist at runtime. The driver owns the allowlist and exposes its Arc so the server can share the same set with the SA token authenticator. create_sandbox now gates pod creation on the allowlist in operator mode — workspaces whose namespace is not yet labeled are rejected at resource render time rather than silently proceeding. Workspace lifecycle itself is unaffected; only sandbox (resource) creation is gated. Signed-off-by: Derek Carr <decarr@redhat.com> * fix(k8s): harden operator mode and address review findings Close the fail-open gap in operator mode when only operator_namespace_file is configured: the allowlist is now created unconditionally in operator mode (fail-closed from startup). Implement the namespace file watcher using the notify crate, following the TLS hot-reload pattern (parent-directory watch, 1s debounce, ConfigMap symlink-swap safe). The file format is a JSON array of namespace name strings. Additional fixes from the 10-reviewer audit: - Change allowlist rejection from InvalidArgument to FailedPrecondition so callers know the request may succeed later once the namespace is provisioned. - NamespaceValidator::Allowlist now holds the OperatorNamespaceAllowlist newtype instead of a raw Arc<RwLock<BTreeSet>>, eliminating silent denial on RwLock poison. - Verify LABEL_MANAGED_BY and LABEL_GATEWAY_ID ownership before deleting a managed namespace. - Replace fixed 5s sleep in operator e2e test with a 30s poll loop. - Add Helm validation for workspaceMode values. - Fix Helm README type column and description for operator fields. - Add insert/remove methods to OperatorNamespaceAllowlist; label watcher now uses them instead of reaching through shared(). - Reject configs with both operator_namespace_label and operator_namespace_file set. Signed-off-by: Derek Carr <decarr@redhat.com> * feat(k8s): add workspace-level compute driver RPCs and harden RBAC Decouple namespace lifecycle from sandbox lifecycle by adding EnsureWorkspace/DeleteWorkspace RPCs to the ComputeDriver service. Namespace creation now happens before credential storage and namespace deletion happens on workspace delete, fixing credential storage in managed workspace mode. - Add EnsureWorkspace and DeleteWorkspace proto RPCs with implementations across all compute drivers (K8s managed delegates to ensure_namespace/delete_namespace_if_empty; others no-op) - Wire ensure_workspace into provider create/update/refresh paths so the namespace exists before the credential driver writes secrets - Wire delete_workspace into workspace deletion for cleanup - Remove delete_namespace_if_empty from sandbox deletion path - Scope ClusterRole secrets access to non-shared workspace modes - Add TODO for TLS cert hot-reload in sandbox gRPC client - Harden e2e tests with control-plane sandbox resolution assertions - Fix docker image save --platform flag for OCI index manifests Signed-off-by: Derek Carr <decarr@redhat.com> * fix(k8s): address re-review findings and add test coverage - Use server-side apply for TLS secret sync (fixes second sandbox creation failure when TLS is enabled) - Scope gateway-ID label selector unconditionally across all workspace modes (fixes operator reads/watches/deletes seeing foreign sandboxes) - Validate operator allowlist in EnsureWorkspace and DeleteWorkspace RPCs (prevents credential writes to namespaces outside the allowlist) - Extend ClusterRole secrets patch+delete to all non-shared modes with credential driver enabled (fixes operator credential storage RBAC) - Validate namespace ownership on 409 conflict in ensure_namespace (prevents adopting unowned namespaces in managed mode) - Replace delete_namespace_if_empty with unconditional delete_namespace letting Kubernetes cascade cleanup (fixes stuck terminating CRs) - Strengthen NetworkPolicy TODO to cover both managed and operator modes - Extract selector and ownership logic into testable free functions - Add unit tests for gateway-ID selectors and namespace ownership - Add Helm ClusterRole RBAC tests for operator credential driver Signed-off-by: Derek Carr <decarr@redhat.com> * ci(k8s): add workspace managed and operator mode e2e to CI Wire the existing e2e:kubernetes:workspace-managed and e2e:kubernetes:workspace-operator mise tasks into the branch-e2e workflow so they run alongside the other core Kubernetes e2e suites. Both are gated by run_core_e2e and included in the Core E2E result gate. Signed-off-by: Derek Carr <decarr@redhat.com> * test(k8s): add e2e tests for workspace namespace modes Add 7 new e2e tests covering workspace namespace lifecycle, TLS secret copying, ownership conflict detection, DNS-1123 validation, operator namespace preservation, and dynamic label watcher behavior. Fix async sandbox deletion race condition in existing tests by polling sandbox list instead of asserting immediately after delete. Signed-off-by: Derek Carr <decarr@redhat.com> * fix(k8s): grant secrets/patch unconditionally and backfill gateway-id labels Address two review findings: 1. RBAC: server-side apply (PATCH) is used for TLS secret sync in multi-namespace modes, but the ClusterRole only granted patch when the kubernetes-secrets credential driver was enabled. Grant patch unconditionally for non-shared modes since TLS sync always needs it; keep delete gated on the credential driver. 2. Upgrade safety: the new gateway-id label selector would orphan legacy Sandbox CRs that predate its introduction. Add a startup backfill in shared mode that patches any managed Sandbox CR missing the gateway-id label before the driver begins serving requests. feat(helm): cert-manager external issuer + OpenShift passthrough Route (#2468)
* fix(core): trust public root CAs alongside the sandbox mTLS CA The supervisor gRPC client only trusted the CA configured via OPENSHELL_TLS_CA, since tonic ClientTlsConfig starts with an empty root store unless with_native_roots()/with_webpki_roots() is also enabled. Deployments where the gateway server certificate is issued by a public CA (e.g. cert-manager against an ACME issuer) caused every supervisor connection to fail the TLS handshake with "UnknownCA", since the sandbox mTLS CA and the server cert issuer were no longer the same. Enable both native and webpki roots in addition to the configured CA. tonic root store is a union of all configured sources, so this does not weaken verification for existing self-signed deployments. webpki-roots (compiled in) is enabled alongside native-roots since the supervisor binary may run in minimal sandbox images without a populated system CA bundle. Signed-off-by: Jesse Jaggars <jjaggars@redhat.com> * feat(helm): support external cert-manager issuers and OpenShift Route passthrough Add certManager.serverIssuerRef/clientIssuerRef so the gateway and mTLS client certificates can be issued by a real Issuer/ClusterIssuer (e.g. ACME) instead of only the chart built-in self-signed CA. Add openshiftRoute template for exposing the gateway via a TLS passthrough Route so the gateway keeps terminating its own TLS/mTLS. The server Certificate excludes internal-only SANs (cluster-local, localhost, loopback) when an external issuer is configured, since ACME issuers reject those per CA/Browser Forum baseline requirements. A template-time fail guard catches the misconfiguration at helm install time rather than asynchronously at cert-manager issuance time. Includes Helm unittest coverage for both issuerRef overrides and Route rendering, plus a CI values overlay for lint coverage. Signed-off-by: Jesse Jaggars <jjaggars@redhat.com> * docs: document cert-manager external issuer and OpenShift Route Update managing-certificates.mdx with the serverIssuerRef workflow and install-time validation behavior. Add a production section to the OpenShift guide covering passthrough Route with a real certificate. Regenerate Helm README for new certManager and openshiftRoute values. Sync debug-openshell-cluster skill with new troubleshooting steps for ACME issuance failures and supervisor UnknownCA from mismatched CAs. Signed-off-by: Jesse Jaggars <jjaggars@redhat.com> * fix(helm, core): address PR review feedback on cert-manager external issuer Addresses all five blocking review items from #2468: 1. Remove .with_native_roots() from supervisor gRPC client -- the supervisor runs inside the user-selected sandbox image, so the image CA bundle is not operator-controlled. Keep .with_webpki_roots() (compiled-in, not user-controlled) alongside the configured CA. 2. Fail at render time when serverIssuerRef.name is set but clientCaFromServerTlsSecret is still true. Add negative Helm test. 3. Remove clientIssuerRef -- changing only clientIssuerRef breaks both directions because trust bundles are not modeled separately. Change serverIssuerRef.kind default from ClusterIssuer to Issuer. 4. Add server.oidc.issuer and server.oidc.audience to the documented OpenShift production Helm command. Add Access Control prerequisite. 5. Fail at render time when openshiftRoute.enabled and disableTls are both true. Add negative Helm test. Signed-off-by: Jesse Jaggars <jjaggars@redhat.com> * fix(drivers): strip GATEWAY_TLS_SERVER_NAME from Docker and Podman env Signed-off-by: Jesse Jaggars <jjaggars@redhat.com> * fix(helm, drivers): guard default clientCaSecretName and add env-strip tests Signed-off-by: Jesse Jaggars <jjaggars@redhat.com> * feat(tls): SNI-based dual certificate for internal and external server TLS Split the gateway server certificate into two: an internal cert issued by the chart's own CA (for supervisor connections via cluster-local SANs) and an external cert issued by an operator-configured Issuer such as ACME/Let's Encrypt (for CLI and Route access via public SANs). The gateway uses SNI-based certificate selection: connections whose SNI hostname matches external_server_names receive the external cert; all others (including those with no SNI) receive the internal cert. Security improvement: remove .with_webpki_roots() from the supervisor gRPC client so supervisors trust only the chart CA, closing a MITM vector via publicly-trusted certificates in user-supplied container images. Key changes: - Add DualCertResolver with SNI-based cert selection and full test coverage - Add external_cert_path, external_key_path, external_server_names to TlsConfig - Validate partial external cert config (error on cert-without-key or vice versa) - Validate empty external_server_names when external cert is configured - Split cert-manager templates into internal + external Certificate resources - Add Helm guards for misconfigured external issuer (empty serverDnsNames, internal-only SANs with external issuer, conflicting clientCaFromServerTlsSecret) - Update gateway-config.mdx, managing-certificates.mdx, openshift.mdx docs - Update debug-openshell-cluster skill for dual-cert troubleshooting Signed-off-by: Pi Agent <agent@openshell.local> * fix(drivers): strip GATEWAY_TLS_SERVER_NAME in VM driver and correct comments Add the same GATEWAY_TLS_SERVER_NAME environment stripping to the VM compute driver that Docker, Podman, and Kubernetes drivers already perform. Without this, a sandbox user on the VM driver could override the TLS server name the supervisor verifies. Fix stale comments in Docker and Podman drivers that referenced 'with WebPKI roots trusted' — WebPKI roots are explicitly not trusted after the tls-webpki-roots removal. Use tls-ring instead of bare channel for tonic in openshell-core so the TLS API (ClientTlsConfig, Endpoint::tls_config) is available without pulling in any root certificate store. Signed-off-by: Pi Agent <agent@openshell.local> * fix(tls, helm): wildcard SNI matching and Route host validation Add RFC 6125 single-level wildcard matching to DualCertResolver so external_server_names entries like *.example.com correctly match SNI hostnames like gw.example.com. Previously only exact matches worked, silently falling back to the internal cert for wildcard configurations. Add a Helm fail guard in route.yaml that rejects openshiftRoute.host values not listed in certManager.serverDnsNames when an external issuer is configured — catches cert/route hostname mismatches at install time instead of at TLS connect time. Quote the host field in route.yaml for robustness. Signed-off-by: Pi Agent <agent@openshell.local> * fix(helm): address blocking review items — client-CA guard, wildcard Route, serverIssuerRef gate 1. Remove the obsolete guard rejecting serverIssuerRef + clientCaFromServerTlsSecret=true. The internal server certificate is always signed by the chart CA (the same CA that signs the client cert), so clientCaFromServerTlsSecret=true is correct — its filtered ca.crt is exactly the right trust anchor. The old workaround (mounting openshell-ca-tls directly) unnecessarily exposed the CA private key to the gateway container. Remove the client-CA overrides from docs, CI overlay, and production examples. 2. Route host validation now supports wildcard certificates per RFC 6125: single-level wildcards like *.example.com match gateway.example.com but not deep.sub.example.com. Require an explicit openshiftRoute.host when an external issuer is configured — without one, OpenShift generates a hostname absent from serverDnsNames. 3. Reject serverIssuerRef.name when certManager.enabled is false — the external certificate, its Secret mount, and the gateway TLS config all require cert-manager to be enabled. Validated on ROSA (dev.dyee.p3) with branch-built images: - Fresh install with letsencrypt-prod ClusterIssuer - SNI dual-cert: external hostname served Let's Encrypt cert - Supervisor mTLS via internal cert path: ConnectSupervisor accepted - Client CA volume: filtered ca.crt from internal server secret (no key) - CLI connected via Route + OIDC Helm tests: 81 pass across 7 suites. feat(vm): export driver traces over OTLP (#2564)
Continue distributed traces across the gateway-to-driver process boundary and export VM driver spans to the same OTLP/gRPC collector. The driver reports as the distinct openshell-driver-vm service. Updated the gateway architecture and configuration reference with a generic external-driver forwarding contract. Instrumented: - Every RemoteComputeDriver RPC injects the active W3C trace context into tonic metadata. Managed VM readiness and runtime initialization give startup capability probes stable parent operations rather than isolated root spans. - A tonic service layer creates fixed, low-cardinality server spans for every ComputeDriver RPC. New handlers inherit tracing automatically; failures record OpenTelemetry error status and the gRPC status code. - Background provisioning remains attached to CreateSandbox after the RPC returns without extending the RPC span lifetime. - Provisioning records image preparation, bootstrap image resolution, overlay preparation, lifecycle configuration, pre-launch hooks, guest preparation, and launcher spawn as child spans. - VM startup reconciliation roots one trace for the persisted-sandbox scan, with per-sandbox restore and provision operations beneath it. The root remains open until all spawned restore tasks finish. - Delete cleanup records its own child operation. Design notes: - The gateway forwards its configured OTLP endpoint to managed external drivers. SDK `OTEL_*` variables continue to own sampling, batching, limits, headers, and transport tuning. - The VM driver has its own tracer provider and service resource so trace backends preserve the service boundary. - RPC operation names come from an explicit method mapping, keeping cardinality bounded without parsing the protobuf descriptor set at runtime. - Propagation uses a remote SpanContext for spawned provisioning. This keeps one trace while allowing the CreateSandbox server span to finish when the RPC response is sent. - Startup restoration is independent of gateway requests. It begins at the VM driver reconciliation span rather than attaching to an unrelated RPC. - Existing tracing events remain on the logging path. The OpenTelemetry layer exports spans only and excludes the SDK exporter callsites to avoid recursive traces. - Export configuration failures do not prevent the driver from serving, and buffered spans are drained during graceful shutdown. - Trace fields identify drivers, sandboxes, images, lifecycle phases, and gRPC outcomes without recording credentials, sandbox tokens, or request query parameters.
