fix(podman): trust an operator-supplied additional CA for direct egress (#3996)
* fix(podman): trust an operator-supplied additional CA for direct egress Since v0.1.2 the Podman supervisor runs as its own container, separate from the workload image, so it can no longer inherit a private CA baked into the workload's system trust store. Policy-allowed, inspected HTTPS requests to destinations signed by that CA fail upstream TLS establishment, and the only workaround is rebuilding the supervisor image with the CA baked in. Add a Podman-only additional_ca_bundle setting, independent of the existing proxy_ca_bundle (which requires https_proxy), that bind-mounts an operator PEM into the supervisor container and folds it into the upstream trust store alongside the system CA bundle. Validated on the gateway host at sandbox-create time, matching the existing corporate proxy CA bundle's validation, so a misconfigured path or certificate-free bundle fails closed immediately rather than producing a failed sandbox once the supervisor container starts. Scoped to Podman only, reusing the existing additive-bundle mechanism without new gateway.toml schema, proto fields, or cross-driver plumbing -- a narrower alternative to the in-flight cross-driver implementation in #3292, which remains the intended long-term direction. Fixes #3781. Signed-off-by: politerealism <burdcat17@gmail.com> * fix(podman): keep additional CA mount on the supervisor build_isolation_specs() keeps only trusted_mount() destinations on the supervisor, and the additional CA path was not in that list. The bind mount stayed on the workload while the supervisor received --additional-ca-bundle for a file it did not have, so startup failed. Add the path to trusted_mount() and cover the final supervisor and workload specs with a test. Correct the docs and a code comment to say the bundle is validated when the driver starts, and add Podman troubleshooting guidance to the debug-openshell-cluster skill. feat(supervisor): export OCSF events as OTLP log records (#4545)
Supervisor OCSF events reached only the sandbox's local JSONL file and the shorthand log lines sent to the gateway, so collectors had no structured copy of most of the security record. When the gateway has `[openshell.gateway.otlp.ocsf]` configured, compute drivers now pass its endpoint and schema version to supervisors, which export their own OCSF events directly as OTLP log records. Supervisors already have egress, so the gateway and its supervisor connection carry no extra load. Supervisors use the same `openshell-otel` exporter as the gateway, with a supervisor resource identity that includes `openshell.sandbox.id` and `openshell.gateway.name`, so telemetry from sandboxes of different gateways sharing a collector can be told apart. This applies to supervisor spans too. Drivers pass the settings to supervisors as `OPENSHELL_OTLP_OCSF_ENDPOINT`, `OPENSHELL_OTLP_OCSF_SCHEMA_VERSION`, and `OPENSHELL_GATEWAY_NAME`; the gateway passes them to the VM driver as arguments. Collector headers that the gateway uses for OCSF export (`OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_LOGS_HEADERS`, else `OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_HEADERS`) travel in each sandbox's supervisor authentication bundle, which only the supervisor reads, so authenticated collectors accept supervisor records without exposing credentials to the workload. The VM driver now sends SIGTERM and waits for the supervisor to exit before closing its liveness pipe. Closing the pipe first made the supervisor exit at once and drop queued records. test(oci): add a shared Docker and Podman suite for image USER and WORKDIR (#3931)
* test(oci): share OCI image checks across Docker and Podman Add an oci-image feature testsuite that runs against installed artifacts. It covers custom WORKDIR placement, image content and ownership, workspace writes from the main process and exec, file transfer including directory-merge upload, OCI user identity, the managed /sandbox fallback, and rejection of an unwritable WORKDIR. CI runs the suite on the Docker rootful, Podman rootful, and Podman rootless tmachine guests. Replace the Docker-only custom_image e2e with the shared suite. Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com> Signed-off-by: Evan Lezar <elezar@nvidia.com> * test(oci): require WorkspaceValidationFailed and cover image USER fallback The unwritable WORKDIR scenario now requires the WorkspaceValidationFailed reason, so unrelated provisioning failures cannot pass it. The numeric USER scenario supplies a policy without a process section, so the image USER is the only source of the sandbox identity. Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com> Signed-off-by: Evan Lezar <elezar@nvidia.com> * test(podman): leave shared OCI identity checks to the oci-image suite The oci-image feature suite covers the sandbox identity seen by the main process and sandbox exec on Docker and Podman. The Podman e2e keeps the checks only it can make: the pinned image ID and the isolated workload/supervisor container pair. Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com> Signed-off-by: Evan Lezar <elezar@nvidia.com> * test(oci): accept existing workspace rejection diagnostics Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com> Signed-off-by: Evan Lezar <elezar@nvidia.com> * test(oci): fix cleanup ordering and restore coverage parity Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com> Signed-off-by: Evan Lezar <elezar@nvidia.com> * test(oci): remove migrated legacy workspace helpers and checks Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com> * fix(drivers): report rejected OCI working directories as WorkspaceValidationFailed The supervisor exits with the reserved status when the sandbox rejects the image working directory. Docker maps that exit during readiness and monitoring and records it before removing the supervisor container, and Podman maps the supervisor companion's exit instead of the workload's. Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com> * test(oci): require WorkspaceValidationFailed for unwritable WORKDIR Unrelated provisioning failures can no longer pass the rejection scenario. Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com> * fix(oci): keep exit 78 reserved and report fixed workspace diagnostics The supervisor no longer passes on a workload's own exit status 78, so drivers cannot misreport it as a workspace rejection after a runtime restart. The rejection is recognized once at agent start and carried as a typed error. Docker reports the same fixed condition message as Podman and logs the supervisor output instead, and its monitor removes the supervisor container when a stop overlaps diagnostics collection. The OCI image suite registers images for cleanup only after they build. Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com> * refactor(oci): simplify workspace failure handling and OCI image tests Report a recorded Docker workspace rejection once, where supervisor readiness fails, and match its fixed message exactly. Read the Podman supervisor exit status once per inspection. Choose the supervisor exit status in one function and derive the workspace error type. The OCI image suite shares step helpers, checks that a custom workspace does not also create /sandbox, and its playbook waits for a connected gateway and collects failure diagnostics through the shared role. Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com> * test(oci): replace podman_oci_identity with shared and driver suite checks The oci-image feature suite now checks, on Docker and Podman, that the image user has no capabilities, has no_new_privs set, and cannot read the sandbox control credentials, and that a custom WORKDIR is not a mount. The checks that need container inspection (pinned image ID, network=none, supervisor user and capabilities) move to a small test in the Podman driver suite. Remove the legacy podman_oci_identity e2e test. Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com> * test(oci): keep podman_oci_identity for Podman-only isolation checks Restore the Podman e2e test removed in the previous commit and drop only the checks the shared oci-image suite now runs on Docker and Podman: workload capabilities, no_new_privs, credential readability, and the workspace and /sandbox mount checks. The pinned image ID and the workload/supervisor isolation checks stay, as does the Podman driver suite unchanged. Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com> * refactor(oci): simplify workspace failure reporting and OCI image suite Carry the Docker control supervisor's failure reason in a typed error instead of matching status text, build the fixed workspace message where the wait result is classified, and drop the fake Docker server test. Inline image cleanup ordering in the suite, read the container engine once, share sandbox naming, and stop granting a literal /sandbox in the image identity policy. Add e2e:oci-image mise tasks and use them from the ARM64 Docker workflow and TESTING.md. Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com> * test(oci): move shared container checks into the OCI image suite Inspect the containers the driver created through the gateway's engine in the shared suite: the workload runs the inspected image ID as the OCI identity without a network or supervisor credential mounts, and the supervisor is a separate non-root container. Keep only the Podman-specific supervisor identity and capability checks in podman_oci_identity. Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com> * test(oci): check the workspace rejection reason from sandbox JSON Read the WorkspaceValidationFailed condition reason from sandbox get --output json instead of matching CLI output, and restore the Docker driver's original workspace failure helpers. feat(podman): honor OCI image working directories (#3982)
* fix(supervisor): report rejected OCI working directories as WorkspaceValidationFailed The RFC 0012 split dropped the supervisor exit status that drivers map to the WorkspaceValidationFailed condition. An image WORKDIR the sandbox identity cannot use then surfaced as ControlSupervisorStartFailed on Docker and as a signal kill on Podman. The supervisor now exits with the reserved status when the sandbox rejects the image working directory. Docker maps that supervisor exit during readiness and monitoring, and Podman maps the supervisor companion's exit instead of the workload's. Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com> * feat(podman): honor OCI image working directories Podman sandboxes now use a custom OCI image WORKDIR as the workspace and as the working directory for agent commands, matching Docker. Empty, /, and /sandbox values keep the managed /sandbox workspace volume. A custom workspace stays in the image's container filesystem: no workspace volume, no archive upload, and no root setup step. Resolve the image ID, user, environment, and working directory from one pinned inspection, validate the workdir with the shared OCI rules, and reject Podman control-path overlaps and image volumes or driver mounts that cover it. The runtime starts from / and passes the resolved path to agent commands with --workdir. Add podman_oci_identity to the Podman CI test list. Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com> * fix(drivers): preserve custom workspace failures across supervisor cleanup Check the Podman custom workspace rather than the absent managed volume in the OCI identity E2E. Classify Bollard wait errors by exit code and record Docker workspace failures before removing the supervisor so readiness retains the specific failure reason. Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com> * fix(docker): use sandbox ID for recorded startup failures Keep the workload container ID for Docker inspection and use the sandbox ID to retrieve the monitor failure. Test with distinct identifiers so the lookup cannot accidentally pass with a container ID. Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com> * refactor(podman): keep WORKDIR change focused on workspace behavior Remove the new cross-driver workspace failure classification path and its monitor/readiness workaround. Preserve Podman WORKDIR resolution, mount safety, and workspace rejection without requiring a distinct condition reason. feat(supervisor): export OTLP traces from sandbox supervisors (#3977)
When the gateway exports OTLP traces, compute drivers pass the gateway's endpoint to supervisors as OPENSHELL_OTLP_ENDPOINT, along with TRACEPARENT from the operation that launched them. The Kubernetes, Docker, Podman, and VM drivers all receive the endpoint from the gateway; driver TOML cannot set it. On Podman Machine, the Podman driver points a loopback endpoint at host.containers.internal, since supervisor loopback is the VM's. The supervisor exports spans as openshell-supervisor, tagged with the sandbox ID, and flushes them before exiting. supervisor.startup joins the sandbox's creation trace and covers image policy discovery, policy load, and boundary attach, confirm, agent start, and access start. Supervisor calls to the gateway carry W3C trace context, so the gateway's server spans nest under them. Each egress connection emits supervisor.egress.connect with authorize, resolve, and dial children. These spans use DEBUG level because every outbound connection starts its own trace. OpenShell spans export at INFO, or at the sandbox log level when it is debug or trace; spans from other libraries export at INFO. Signed-off-by: Kris Hicks <khicks@nvidia.com> |

fix(podman): create managed workspace volumes owned by the workload identity (#3981)
* fix(podman): create managed workspace volumes owned by the workload identity Podman now creates the managed /sandbox volume with uid/gid options for the resolved workload identity, so the workload starts directly as that identity. This fixes rootful sandboxes whose image USER or policy run_as_user could not write to a root-owned /sandbox, and removes the root-then-drop workspace chown start path. Resource admission accepts the managed workspace volume when its options match the workload container's final identity, or are empty for volumes created by older gateways. The channel volume still requires empty options. refactor(runtime): retire Community image dependencies (#3386)
* feat(sandbox): default to official Alpine sandbox image default_sandbox_image() now returns docker.io/library/alpine:3.22, a generic version-qualified official image, so a fresh install no longer depends on the community sandbox image catalog. All compute drivers (docker, podman, kubernetes, vm) inherit this fallback. Part of #3116. Signed-off-by: Akram Signed-off-by: Akram <akram.benaissi@gmail.com> * feat(deploy): default deployment configs to the official Alpine sandbox image Update the shared gateway default_image, Helm chart values, the standalone Kubernetes manifest, and the dev gateway task scripts to use docker.io/library/alpine:3.22 instead of the community base image, consistent with default_sandbox_image(). GPU e2e image-build base is left unchanged (CUDA needs a glibc base). Part of #3116. Signed-off-by: Akram Signed-off-by: Akram <akram.benaissi@gmail.com> * feat(driver): default to numeric non-root identity for USER-less images With the default sandbox image now Alpine, images that declare no OCI USER must start instead of being rejected. When the image declares no USER and the policy requests none, the Podman and Docker drivers now supply a numeric non-root identity (DEFAULT_SANDBOX_UID/GID = 1000) instead of rejecting, matching the numeric-identity behavior of the Kubernetes and VM drivers. The supervisor's resolved-identity path runs the sandbox as a synthesized non-root account without the account existing in the image. fix(sandbox): harden isolated supervisor startup (#3426)
As part of the RFC-0012 changes, the Podman runtime moved trusted networking into a paired supervisor running as the resolved non-root identity, while the capability-free sandbox retained ownership of seccomp-mediated I/O. The supervisor still generated interception TLS material under the root-owned /etc/openshell-tls directory, and the sandbox treated the documented ENOENT notification race as a fatal listener failure. This meant TLS interception could fail with a permission error, and an exiting target process could stop the network broker while the kernel was preparing its notification. Now, we store generated supervisor TLS material in its writable /run tmpfs and retry ENOENT notification races while preserving fatal handling for other listener errors. feat(sandbox): support rootfs tar as --from source for VM driver (#2863)
* feat(sandbox): support rootfs tar as --from source for VM driver Accept flat rootfs tar archives (.tar, .tar.gz, .tgz) via the --from flag for VM-backed gateways. The CLI detects the archive extension, validates that the gateway uses the VM compute driver, and passes the tar path through driver_config. The VM driver copies the tar into its staging area and feeds it into the existing rootfs extraction and ext4 disk creation pipeline, skipping the container image pull/export steps. Closes #2175 Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(sandbox): validate rootfs tar path at the VM driver boundary The rootfs_tar_path field in driver_config was passed from the API caller directly to tokio::fs::copy without validation. An authenticated user bypassing the CLI could supply arbitrary host paths (e.g. /dev/zero for disk exhaustion, or readable host files for data exfiltration). Introduce a trusted staging directory that the VM driver creates on startup and advertises via GetCapabilities. The CLI now copies the tar into the staging directory before creating the sandbox, and the driver validates that the received path is a regular file inside the staging root and within a configurable size limit (default 10 GiB) before any I/O. New VmDriverConfig options: - rootfs_tar_staging_dir: override the staging directory (default: <state_dir>/rootfs-tar-staging) - rootfs_tar_max_bytes: override the size limit (default: 10 GiB) Addresses GATOR-28b5152e-01. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(sandbox): request-scoped staging, size pre-check, and cleanup for rootfs tar Tighten the rootfs tar staging flow to address the remaining GATOR-01 obligations: - Request-scoped staging: the CLI creates a unique per-request subdirectory (req-<pid>) under the staging root instead of placing files directly in the shared directory. The driver enforces that the tar path is at depth 2 (staging_root/<subdir>/<file>), preventing cross-request path selection. - Size pre-check: the driver advertises rootfs_tar_max_bytes via GetCapabilities. The CLI reads this limit and rejects oversized files before copying, avoiding disk exhaustion in the staging directory. - Cleanup: the driver removes the request staging subdirectory after consuming the tar (on cache hit, copy success, or copy failure), ensuring staged data does not persist beyond the request. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(vm): restore rootfs-tar sandboxes from persisted image identity On restore or restart, the one-shot staged tar archive has already been cleaned up. Reading the persisted image identity from the sandbox state directory and resolving the cached disk path directly avoids re-accessing the deleted staging path. Addresses GATOR-168b9210-01. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(cli): use random staging dirs and enforce byte limit during rootfs tar copy Replace PID-based request staging directories with tempfile-generated random names to prevent collisions and make paths unpredictable. Replace bare tokio::fs::copy with a streaming copy loop that enforces the advertised max_bytes limit during transfer, closing the TOCTOU gap between the pre-copy size check and the actual copy. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@nvidia.com> Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(sandbox): issue rootfs tar staging slots from the gateway A caller could name any host path in `driver_config.vm.rootfs_tar_path`, which the privileged VM driver then read. The CLI-side locality check did not apply to direct API requests. The gateway now owns staging. `BeginRootfsTarStaging` allocates a request-scoped directory under the driver-advertised staging root and returns an opaque single-use token; `CreateSandbox` carries the token, and the gateway substitutes the path it allocated before dispatching to the driver. `template.driver_config.<driver>.rootfs_tar_path` is rejected outright in request validation, so a caller-supplied path never reaches privileged I/O. Tokens are bound to the issuing workspace and subject, consumed once, and expire after 30 minutes. Outstanding slots are capped per caller and overall, so one caller can neither exhaust the staging filesystem nor starve others. An RAII guard reclaims the directory on every failure path after consumption, and an age-gated sweep runs at startup and on each reconcile pass for directories whose driver died before its own cleanup. The token is stripped from the public sandbox before persistence: the stored copy is returned verbatim by GetSandbox, ListSandboxes and WatchSandbox to every member of the workspace. Also fixes two defects this exposed: - The CLI wrote `rootfs_tar_path` at the top level of `driver_config`, but the gateway forwards only `driver_config.<driver_name>`, silently dropping unmatched keys. The archive never reached the VM driver, so the documented `--from ./rootfs.tar` flow did not work at all. Config is now nested under `vm` and deep-merged, so a caller's existing VM settings survive instead of being clobbered by a shallow extend. - Staging previously required `GetGatewayInfo`, which is restricted to `platform_admin`, making the feature unusable for ordinary users on any RBAC-enabled gateway. The new RPC matches CreateSandbox at `sandbox:write` / `workspace_role: user`. `compute_driver.proto` is unchanged; the gateway reads the staging root from the capabilities it already stores. Refs #2175 Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(vm): derive rootfs tar cache identity from archive contents The prepared-disk cache key combined the archive's full path with an mtime truncated to seconds, then mapped punctuation to `-`. Distinct paths such as `/tmp/a/b.tar` and `/tmp/a-b.tar` collapsed onto the same key and reused each other's disk, a rewrite within the same second kept stale contents, and a long path could exceed filesystem component limits. Identity is now a SHA-256 of the archive contents. This is also what makes the cache work at all now that the gateway allocates a fresh staging directory per request: a path-derived key would miss on every create. The archive is hashed, the cache checked, and only on a miss copied — so a hit skips writing a multi-gigabyte file. The copy is hashed as it is written and rejected if the digest differs from the first pass, which closes the window where the source changes during staging rather than approximating it with a re-stat. Refs #2175 Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(vm): decompress gzip rootfs tar archives during staging `--from` accepts `.tar.gz` and `.tgz`, but the driver staged whatever bytes it was given and the guest image-prep VM extracts the staged file with a plain `tar -xpf`. Compressed sources therefore depended on the guest tar auto-detecting gzip, and the prepared disk was sized from the compressed length, which is far too small for the expanded rootfs. Staging now detects gzip from the archive's magic bytes -- the driver only ever sees a gateway-issued staging path, never the caller's file name -- and writes an uncompressed tar. The digest still covers the source bytes, so the "archive changed while staging" check is unaffected, and expansion is bounded by `rootfs_tar_max_bytes` so a compression bomb cannot fill the host disk. `extract_rootfs_archive_to` sniffs gzip as well, so the host-side extraction path matches. Adds unit coverage for gzip staging, bounded expansion, and gzip extraction, plus an e2e sandbox created from a gzip-compressed export. refactor(otel): unify compute driver tracing (#2995)
Centralize compute-driver RPC descriptors, stream instrumentation, provider routing, and standalone installation in openshell-otel. Use typed RPC constants so gateway and in-process driver paths cannot panic on unknown operation strings or repeat runtime method parsing. Emit semantic-convention rpc.service and rpc.method attributes, preserve trace context and resource identity across deployment modes, and route both RPC boundary and backend crate spans to each selected driver provider. Leave consumer-dropped watch spans unset while recording observed terminal status, and avoid reboxing untraced external-driver streams. Derive each driver tracing identity from Cargo package and crate metadata and attach its descriptor to the compute-driver registration, keeping provider selection and target routing tied to the registered implementation. Share tracing setup and round-trip test support across Docker, Podman, Kubernetes, and VM, and update the gateway tracing documentation. Signed-off-by: Kris Hicks <khicks@nvidia.com> |

fix(compute): recover Error-phase sandboxes on gateway startup (#2269)
* fix(compute): recover Error-phase sandboxes on gateway startup Sandboxes whose container exited on its own (e.g. SIGTERM from a Podman or Docker machine restart) were left stuck in the Error phase even though the container could be restarted. The startup sweep skipped every Error-phase sandbox unconditionally. Include Error-phase sandboxes in the startup sweep when their Ready condition reason marks a container exit or stop. If the driver restarts the container, move the sandbox back to Provisioning with a Resumed condition; if the container is gone or the start fails, leave the Error state untouched. Genuine (non-container-exit) errors are still skipped. Container-exit restart is handled by the drivers' existing idempotent start_sandbox path, which already restarts stopped/exited containers. The ContainerExited/ContainerStopped condition reasons are promoted to shared constants in openshell-core so the gateway and drivers agree on the recovery signal. Fixes #2179 Signed-off-by: Ian Miller <milleryan2003@gmail.com> * fix(compute): keep ordinary container exits terminal during startup recovery Startup recovery treated every non-OOM container exit as recoverable, lumping application crashes and non-zero exits together with machine/daemon-restart signal kills under the shared `ContainerExited` Ready-condition reason. On the next gateway startup it restarted those crashed workloads and replaced the terminal error with `Resumed`, erasing the failure signal and repeatedly reviving crash-prone sandboxes. Introduce a distinct `ContainerRuntimeRestart` reason for containers terminated by an external signal (exit 137/143 = SIGKILL/SIGTERM), which is the signature of a machine/daemon restart. The Podman inspect-based classification emits it; the startup recovery gate now recovers only `ContainerRuntimeRestart` and `ContainerStopped`. Ordinary `ContainerExited` records stay terminal, so genuine failures keep their error signal. Because only the new reason is recoverable and older gateways never persisted it, exits recorded before this change also stay terminal after an upgrade. Add regression coverage: a generic `ContainerExited` error is not relaunched, a signal-kill classifies as `ContainerRuntimeRestart`, and the startup sweep recovers only the runtime-restart record. Signed-off-by: Ian Miller <milleryan2003@gmail.com> * fix(docker): reclassify signal-killed containers as runtime restart Mirror the Podman classification in the Docker driver so that externally signal-killed containers (exit 137/143, non-OOM) are persisted with the ContainerRuntimeRestart ready reason and become eligible for startup recovery, while ordinary exits and OOM kills stay terminal. current_snapshots now inspects EXITED containers to obtain the exit code and OOM flag, then applies the shared exit classification. Without the inspect step the list-summary path lacks an exit code, so the recovery gate could never fire for Docker. Adds unit tests covering signal-kill reclassification (137/143), ordinary exit staying terminal (exit 1), and OOM staying terminal despite exit 137. feat(kubernetes): export driver traces over OTLP (#2958)
Mirror the VM, Podman, and Docker driver tracing setup for Kubernetes. Export standalone driver spans through OTLP/gRPC as the distinct openshell-driver-kubernetes service, preserve gateway trace context, record lifecycle operations and gRPC failures, and flush spans on shutdown. Kubernetes currently runs in-process when selected as a built-in gateway driver. Use the temporary server-boundary shim shared with Podman and Docker so traces retain the shape they will have when Kubernetes moves to a separate process. Move the common ComputeDriver RPC tracing layer into openshell-otel to keep all drivers aligned. Propagate the active W3C context through the controller-reserved Sandbox annotation and enable Agent Sandbox OTLP export in the local k3s workflow. This connects asynchronous controller reconciliation spans to the originating OpenShell create trace. Expose gateway OTLP configuration through Helm and add an Aspire collector to the local k3s workflow. Extend helm:k3s:forward with OTLP ingest and trace UI forwarding for Kubernetes and local container gateway development. Signed-off-by: Kris Hicks <khicks@nvidia.com> |

fix(core): fall back to podman CLI when no API socket is found (#1858)
* fix(core): fall back to podman CLI when no API socket responds Auto-detection only checked well-known Podman socket paths, so a Podman machine exposing its API socket at a non-standard location went undetected. The symlink at a well-known path is not always present; it varies by Podman version, machine provider, and platform. Extend detect_podman_socket() to fall back to podman CLI discovery when no well-known candidate responds: podman info --format json determines whether the service is local or remote, and podman machine inspect resolves the host-side forwarded socket for VM-backed machines. All existing callers (driver auto-detection, the Podman driver, and the VM driver's container-engine fallback) pick this up without change. Select the machine backing the active Podman connection instead of the first entry from podman machine inspect, honoring podman's connection precedence: CONTAINER_CONNECTION, then CONTAINER_HOST (mapped to a connection by URI), then the containers.conf default. An explicit endpoint that maps to no known machine is left unresolved rather than guessing an unrelated machine. When CONTAINER_HOST is an explicit unix:// socket, use that path directly since podman info connects through it. Update the gateway config reference and the Podman driver README, which described probe-only detection. Signed-off-by: Russell Bryant <rbryant@redhat.com> * fix(core): inspect podman machine by name and bound discovery probes Address two startup defects in Podman socket auto-detection: - Remote discovery ran `podman machine inspect` with no arguments, which inspects only `podman-machine-default`. On a host whose default connection is a different machine, selection fell back to the first (wrong) entry, so the gateway could operate against the wrong backend. Resolve the active machine first and inspect it by name, trying the `-root`-stripped machine for rootful connections and returning None when no machine can be mapped instead of substituting another. - `podman info`, `podman machine inspect`, and `podman system connection list` used unbounded `Command::output()`, so a stalled machine, SSH connection, or helper could hang gateway startup indefinitely. Route all three through a bounded runner that kills and reaps the child on a documented deadline and returns None so detection can continue. Signed-off-by: Russell Bryant <rbryant@redhat.com> * fix(core): bound podman probe stdout drainage and kill descendants The previous timeout only bounded waiting for the direct child to exit. Draining stdout still called read_to_end, which waits for pipe EOF — a Podman probe can leave a daemonized descendant (SSH multiplexer, gvproxy) that inherited the stdout pipe, so drainage could wait indefinitely even after the direct child exited, defeating the deadline. Run each probe as its own process-group leader, cap stdout drainage by the same deadline via a channel, and on expiry kill the whole process group so descendants holding the pipe are terminated and EOF is reached. Add a regression test where the direct child exits but a backgrounded descendant keeps stdout open. Signed-off-by: Russell Bryant <rbryant@redhat.com> * fix(core): make podman probe deadline absolute against escaped descendants The prior drainage timeout still ended in an untimed rx.recv() after killing the process group. A descendant that escaped the probe's process group (e.g. via setsid) while holding the stdout pipe would not be killed, so read_to_end never saw EOF, the reader never sent, and that recv() could block gateway startup indefinitely. On drainage timeout, best-effort kill the process group and return None immediately, abandoning the reader thread instead of waiting on it again. The deadline now bounds the whole call regardless of what descendants do. Add a regression test whose stdout-holding descendant escapes the process group (`set -m`) and assert the call still returns promptly. feat(sandbox, podman): trust corporate CA for https:// proxies and intercepted TLS (#2512)
* feat(sandbox, podman): trust corporate CA for https:// proxies and intercepted TLS The corporate proxy chaining only accepted plain http:// proxy URLs, so operators whose forward proxy terminates TLS with a private corporate CA had no way to reach it, and TLS-intercepting proxies (mitmproxy, squid ssl-bump) that re-sign tunneled server certificates broke every upstream handshake after CONNECT. The supervisor now accepts https:// proxy URLs: it wraps the connection to the proxy in TLS before the CONNECT handshake, verifying the proxy certificate against the built-in Mozilla roots, the system CA bundle, and an optional operator corporate CA bundle. The upstream dial returns a Plain/Tls stream enum consumed generically by the relay paths. The corporate CA is delivered as a driver-supplied command-line argument (--upstream-proxy-ca-bundle), never an environment variable, matching the hardened proxy-config model where a sandbox image cannot influence the operator's egress boundary. It is folded into the sandbox combined trust bundle (write_ca_files) and the L7 upstream verification store (build_upstream_client_config) at startup, so intercepted upstream handshakes succeed and sandbox workloads trust the re-signed certificates. Configuration is fail-closed: a CA bundle set without a proxy, or an unreadable or certificate-free file, is fatal rather than silently weakening the trust boundary. The shared parse_upstream_proxy_url validator accepts https:// (recording the scheme so the driver and supervisor agree), keeping the explicit-port requirement. The Podman driver gains a proxy_ca_bundle operator setting (TOML, --sandbox-proxy-ca-bundle, OPENSHELL_SANDBOX_PROXY_CA_BUNDLE) that bind-mounts the host PEM read-only into the sandbox (a CA certificate is not secret) and points --upstream-proxy-ca-bundle at it, with a create-time readability check. The standalone dev gateway task passes OPENSHELL_SANDBOX_PROXY_CA_BUNDLE through to the generated podman config, so a local gateway can be pointed at a TLS-intercepting proxy without hand-editing the regenerated TOML. Refs #1792 Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(sandbox): reject CA bundles with valid PEM framing but invalid X.509 DER The proxy CA bundle validation counted PEM blocks that base64-decoded successfully, but did not verify the decoded bytes were accepted as trust anchors by RootCertStore. A bundle with syntactically valid PEM framing but invalid DER would pass the startup check while contributing zero usable anchors, causing opaque TLS failures at runtime instead of a fail-closed startup error. Validate decoded certificates through RootCertStore::add_parsable_certificates and reject the bundle unless at least one is accepted. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(sandbox, podman): allow proxy auth without insecure acknowledgement for https:// proxies For an https:// proxy the Proxy-Authorization credential travels inside the verified TLS session, so the proxy_auth_allow_insecure acknowledgement is unnecessary. Previously both http:// and https:// proxies required it, producing a misleading cleartext-risk diagnostic for a path that is already encrypted. Skip the requirement when the proxy URL uses https://; the acknowledgement is still tolerated if set. Updated in both the supervisor and Podman driver validation paths, with docs and tests. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix: format Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(kubernetes): use truly unsupported scheme in proxy validation test https:// is now a supported proxy scheme after a13c4dce, so the unsupported-scheme test must use a genuinely unsupported scheme. Signed-off-by: Philippe Martin <phmartin@redhat.com> * fix(e2e): sign the https proxy fixture listener cert with a CA The corporate-proxy E2E fixture served a single `openssl req -x509` certificate as its TLS listener identity. OpenSSL marks that certificate `basicConstraints: critical, CA:TRUE`, and rustls refuses a CA certificate presented as an end-entity certificate (CaUsedAsEndEntity). The supervisor's TLS handshake with the proxy therefore failed, the upstream dial errored, and the workload's CONNECT was dropped without a response, so podman_corporate_proxy_trusts_ca_bundle_for_https_proxy failed on the approved destination while policy denial still worked. Generate a corporate CA and a separate listener leaf signed by it, serve the leaf chain, and publish only the CA as the bundle the supervisor trusts. This is what an intercepting proxy actually presents, and it exercises the corporate-CA trust path rather than pinning the listener certificate itself. feat(docker): export driver traces over OTLP (#2851)
Mirror the VM and Podman driver tracing setup for Docker. Export Docker driver spans through OTLP/gRPC as the distinct openshell-driver-docker service, preserve gateway trace context, record lifecycle and asynchronous provisioning operations, and report gRPC failures. Docker currently runs in-process when selected as a built-in gateway driver. Add the same temporary server-boundary shim used by Podman so traces retain the shape they will have when Docker moves to a separate process. Generalize the gateway provider selection for both in-process drivers and share the OTLP collector fixture across Docker, Podman, and VM tracing tests. Signed-off-by: Kris Hicks <khicks@nvidia.com> |

feat(compute): add standalone first-party drivers (#2822)
* feat(compute): add standalone first-party drivers Build Docker, Podman, Kubernetes, and VM drivers as external binaries and exercise each through the public compute-driver API. Keep the external E2E setup complete at introduction, including VM image selection, Kubernetes post-renderer isolation, supervisor reuse, and scoped Podman coverage. External Kubernetes endpoints support shared and managed workspace modes. Operator mode remains restricted to the in-process driver because gateway authentication and the driver must share a dynamic namespace allowlist. feat(podman): export driver traces over OTLP (#2782)
Mirror the VM driver tracing setup for Podman. Export standalone driver spans through OTLP/gRPC as the distinct openshell-driver-podman service, propagate W3C context across ComputeDriver RPCs, record bounded RPC names and failures, and flush buffered spans during graceful shutdown. Podman still runs in-process when selected as a built-in gateway driver. Add a temporary tracing shim that partitions gateway and Podman spans by target into separate tracer providers while preserving their shared trace and parentage. The shim also emits the same ComputeDriver server boundary that the tonic layer emits out of process, keeping the observable trace shape stable when Podman is eventually extracted. Trace container create preparation, image and storage setup, lifecycle operations, and cleanup. Document the service boundary and cover it with isolated and repeated tracing tests.
