* refactor(sandbox): keep runtime transports behind the backend

Signed-off-by: Drew Newberry <anewberry@nvidia.com>

* fix(docker): mount the runtime control volume read-only

The sandbox runtime only dials the supervisor-owned control socket, so
it does not need write access to the control volume. Mount it read-only
in the runtime container and stop staging the control directory through
the runtime bundle; the supervisor stager already initializes it through
its own writable mount.

* fix(kubernetes): separate legacy and runtime-initiated control services

Keep os-boundary selecting the workload and add os-supervisor for runtime-initiated connections. Bind the mode marker to its runtime generation so a restart by an older gateway does not inherit stale mode metadata. Preserve the legacy Service across creation and restart, validate the active endpoint, and drop the Service patch permission.

Piotr Mlocekanddivesh 604b9f66f6 feat(config): deliver gateway configuration over the supervisor session (#4320)
Supervisors poll the gateway for configuration every 10 seconds. This PR adds an opt-in push mode (config_delivery_mode = "push"): supervisors still start by polling, and once their ConnectSupervisor session is accepted, the gateway delivers every later change over it and supervisors apply it and report the result. poll stays the default, and older supervisors and gateways keep polling.

Matthew Grossman 633cc6dee6 perf(server): drop async_trait from mutation replay and supervisor gateway traits (#4619)
* perf(server): drop async_trait from mutation replay

Mutation is never used as a trait object, so the boxed futures from
#[tonic::async_trait] buy nothing. Declare its methods as
-> impl Future + Send instead. This keeps the Send guarantee, removes a
heap allocation per call, and cuts a cold openshell-server lib build from
~60s to ~36s.

Box the approve_all_draft_chunks future at its call sites, since it is no
longer boxed implicitly and trips clippy::large_futures.

Closes #4618

* perf(supervisor): drop async_trait from generic-only gateway traits

StartupGateway, PolicyGatewayClient, and ReportClient are only used
through generic parameters, never as trait objects. Declare their methods
as -> impl Future + Send instead of boxing each future.

Polite_realism 10241ab47b fix(podman): trust an operator-supplied additional CA for direct egress (#3996)
* fix(podman): trust an operator-supplied additional CA for direct egress

Since v0.1.2 the Podman supervisor runs as its own container, separate
from the workload image, so it can no longer inherit a private CA
baked into the workload's system trust store. Policy-allowed,
inspected HTTPS requests to destinations signed by that CA fail
upstream TLS establishment, and the only workaround is rebuilding the
supervisor image with the CA baked in.

Add a Podman-only additional_ca_bundle setting, independent of the
existing proxy_ca_bundle (which requires https_proxy), that bind-mounts
an operator PEM into the supervisor container and folds it into the
upstream trust store alongside the system CA bundle. Validated on the
gateway host at sandbox-create time, matching the existing corporate
proxy CA bundle's validation, so a misconfigured path or
certificate-free bundle fails closed immediately rather than producing
a failed sandbox once the supervisor container starts.

Scoped to Podman only, reusing the existing additive-bundle mechanism
without new gateway.toml schema, proto fields, or cross-driver
plumbing -- a narrower alternative to the in-flight cross-driver
implementation in #3292, which remains the intended long-term
direction.

Fixes #3781.

Signed-off-by: politerealism <burdcat17@gmail.com>

* fix(podman): keep additional CA mount on the supervisor

build_isolation_specs() keeps only trusted_mount() destinations on the
supervisor, and the additional CA path was not in that list. The bind
mount stayed on the workload while the supervisor received
--additional-ca-bundle for a file it did not have, so startup failed.

Add the path to trusted_mount() and cover the final supervisor and
workload specs with a test. Correct the docs and a code comment to say
the bundle is validated when the driver starts, and add Podman
troubleshooting guidance to the debug-openshell-cluster skill.

ShijuandJohn Myers 29a2b8e7d9 feat(providers): report bounded token-grant failures (#4427)
* feat(providers): report bounded token-grant failures

* test(providers): fix trusted grant recovery fixture

Signed-off-by: Shiju <shiju@nvidia.com>

* test(providers): enable denial API in recovery fixture

Signed-off-by: Shiju <shiju@nvidia.com>

* refactor(providers): simplify token-grant failure reporting

Remove duplication and dead paths from the token-grant failure
reporting without changing classification, the workload-visible
502 response, or the wire format.

- Build the gRPC failure envelope with tonic-types, store the typed
failure in EndpointFailure, and share one request-ID rule and one
  endpoint-status authority check.
- Merge the gateway exchange client wrapper, drop forwarding
validators, and name the request field when a reported cause is
  rejected.
- Inject fallback credentials only from live provider state and
delete the unread per-connection credential copy. Keep one 502
writer per path and restore the base token-cache handling.
- Check the token endpoint after the cache lookup, still before any
  credential acquisition.
- Document 429 and 5xx classification as implemented, and drop tests
that repeat retained assertions through the same code path.

Signed-off-by: Shiju <shiju@nvidia.com>

* refactor(providers): trim token-grant failure tests and supervisor API

Cut the token-grant failure tests to one test per distinct behavior
across core, gateway, supervisor, CLI and Go, and replace the 794-line
closure E2E with status assertions in the existing route-recovery E2E:
the refused grant appears in sandbox status with the response's
request ID, code, stage and upstream status, and the matching grant's
later success clears it.

- Pin the live provider snapshot with one helper used by inspected and
fallback forwarding, and inject selector-matched grants through
inject_for_selectors, which borrows the pinned context. Move the
  test-only wrapper into test_support.
- Drop the 35-second wrappers around the gateway grant RPC. The shared
channel bounds the connection attempt and the gateway bounds its
  token-service calls.
- Log the token service's OAuth error and error_description, without
control characters and limited to 256 characters each, with the
request ID in the gateway or supervisor log. Status and the workload
response still carry only the bounded cause.
- Keep one check that an untrusted token-service certificate cannot
  assert a cause.

Signed-off-by: Shiju <shiju@nvidia.com>

* fix(providers): restore test import and features lockfile

The injection tests named EndpointObservationSender through the parent
module, which no longer imports it. The features suite lockfile kept the
tonic TLS dependency that the removed E2E fixture added.

Signed-off-by: Shiju <shiju@nvidia.com>

* test(providers): fix body-bound fixture width and table type

Pass the response-size width as a named argument; an implicitly captured
constant panics at runtime. Name the mutation type in the validation
table for Clippy.

Signed-off-by: Shiju <shiju@nvidia.com>

* test(providers): pad exact-bound body without a format width

MAX_TOKEN_RESPONSE_BYTES exceeds u16::MAX, the largest format width, so
the padded fixture panicked. Pad with repeat_n as before.

* test(server): update public RPC schema hash after rebase

Main added the ListProvidersRequest label selector. The merged public
schema hash comes from the Branch Checks storage_proto test output.

* fix(providers): keep token-service error text out of grant logs

A token service can echo a submitted credential in its OAuth error or
error_description. Log only the classified failure code, HTTP status and
request ID, and cover the canary echo in a dedicated test binary.

krishicks 6dbe4adc56 feat(supervisor): export OCSF events as OTLP log records (#4545)
Supervisor OCSF events reached only the sandbox's local JSONL file and
the shorthand log lines sent to the gateway, so collectors had no
structured copy of most of the security record. When the gateway has
`[openshell.gateway.otlp.ocsf]` configured, compute drivers now pass its
endpoint and schema version to supervisors, which export their own OCSF
events directly as OTLP log records. Supervisors already have egress,
so the gateway and its supervisor connection carry no extra load.

Supervisors use the same `openshell-otel` exporter as the gateway, with
a supervisor resource identity that includes `openshell.sandbox.id` and
`openshell.gateway.name`, so telemetry from sandboxes of different
gateways sharing a collector can be told apart. This applies to
supervisor spans too. Drivers pass the settings to supervisors as
`OPENSHELL_OTLP_OCSF_ENDPOINT`, `OPENSHELL_OTLP_OCSF_SCHEMA_VERSION`, and
`OPENSHELL_GATEWAY_NAME`; the gateway passes them to the VM driver as
arguments.

Collector headers that the gateway uses for OCSF export
(`OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_LOGS_HEADERS`, else `OTEL_EXPORTER_OTLP_HEADERS`)
travel in each sandbox's supervisor authentication bundle, which only
the supervisor reads, so authenticated collectors accept supervisor
records without exposing credentials to the workload.

The VM driver now sends SIGTERM and waits for the supervisor to exit
before closing its liveness pipe. Closing the pipe first made the
supervisor exit at once and drop queued records.

krishicks 07fd2386ce feat(server): export gateway OCSF events as OTLP log records (#4500)
The gateway only persisted its OCSF events to the JSONL file, so collectors had
to tail that file. Adding `[openshell.gateway.otlp.ocsf]` now also exports each
gateway OCSF event as an OTLP log record, using the same resource identity as
gateway traces. `schema_version` optionally downgrades the exported JSON to
OCSF 1.1 or 1.3.

OTLP endpoints are now configured per signal, so OCSF events can go to a
collector that feeds a SIEM while spans go elsewhere. The existing
`[openshell.gateway.otlp]` `endpoint` is the default for every signal and on
its own still enables trace export. `[otlp.traces]` overrides the trace
endpoint, and `[otlp.ocsf]` takes its own `endpoint` or falls back to the
default.

Each record carries the OCSF JSON as its body, the event time as its timestamp,
a severity mapped from `severity_id`, and `ocsf.*` and `openshell.sandbox.id`
attributes for filtering without parsing the body.

Records flow through a queue bounded by count and bytes to the SDK OTLP log
exporter in batches bounded the same way. Failed exports retry with backoff;
records lost to a full queue, an oversized body, or exhausted retries are
counted in metrics and reported to the collector in an `openshell.ocsf.gap`
record on the next successful export. The exporter lives in `openshell-otel` so
other processes can share it.

Helm deployments set the `traces` and `ocsf` tables through `gatewayConfig`,
and the local development gateway tasks enable OCSF export.

Matthew GrossmanandEvan Lezar 8c67c27e8b test(oci): add a shared Docker and Podman suite for image USER and WORKDIR (#3931)
* test(oci): share OCI image checks across Docker and Podman

Add an oci-image feature testsuite that runs against installed artifacts.
It covers custom WORKDIR placement, image content and ownership, workspace
writes from the main process and exec, file transfer including
directory-merge upload, OCI user identity, the managed /sandbox fallback,
and rejection of an unwritable WORKDIR.

CI runs the suite on the Docker rootful, Podman rootful, and Podman
rootless tmachine guests.

Replace the Docker-only custom_image e2e with the shared suite.

Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com>
Signed-off-by: Evan Lezar <elezar@nvidia.com>

* test(oci): require WorkspaceValidationFailed and cover image USER fallback

The unwritable WORKDIR scenario now requires the WorkspaceValidationFailed
reason, so unrelated provisioning failures cannot pass it. The numeric
USER scenario supplies a policy without a process section, so the image
USER is the only source of the sandbox identity.

Signed-off-by: Evan Lezar <elezar@nvidia.com>

* test(podman): leave shared OCI identity checks to the oci-image suite

The oci-image feature suite covers the sandbox identity seen by the main
process and sandbox exec on Docker and Podman. The Podman e2e keeps the
checks only it can make: the pinned image ID and the isolated
workload/supervisor container pair.

* test(oci): remove migrated legacy workspace helpers and checks

Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com>

* fix(drivers): report rejected OCI working directories as WorkspaceValidationFailed

The supervisor exits with the reserved status when the sandbox rejects the
image working directory. Docker maps that exit during readiness and
monitoring and records it before removing the supervisor container, and
Podman maps the supervisor companion's exit instead of the workload's.

Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com>

* test(oci): require WorkspaceValidationFailed for unwritable WORKDIR

Unrelated provisioning failures can no longer pass the rejection scenario.

Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com>

* fix(oci): keep exit 78 reserved and report fixed workspace diagnostics

The supervisor no longer passes on a workload's own exit status 78, so
drivers cannot misreport it as a workspace rejection after a runtime
restart. The rejection is recognized once at agent start and carried as a
typed error. Docker reports the same fixed condition message as Podman and
logs the supervisor output instead, and its monitor removes the supervisor
container when a stop overlaps diagnostics collection. The OCI image suite
registers images for cleanup only after they build.

Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com>

* refactor(oci): simplify workspace failure handling and OCI image tests

Report a recorded Docker workspace rejection once, where supervisor
readiness fails, and match its fixed message exactly. Read the Podman
supervisor exit status once per inspection. Choose the supervisor exit
status in one function and derive the workspace error type.

The OCI image suite shares step helpers, checks that a custom workspace
does not also create /sandbox, and its playbook waits for a connected
gateway and collects failure diagnostics through the shared role.

Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com>

* test(oci): replace podman_oci_identity with shared and driver suite checks

The oci-image feature suite now checks, on Docker and Podman, that the
image user has no capabilities, has no_new_privs set, and cannot read
the sandbox control credentials, and that a custom WORKDIR is not a
mount. The checks that need container inspection (pinned image ID,
network=none, supervisor user and capabilities) move to a small test in
the Podman driver suite. Remove the legacy podman_oci_identity e2e test.

Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com>

* test(oci): keep podman_oci_identity for Podman-only isolation checks

Restore the Podman e2e test removed in the previous commit and drop
only the checks the shared oci-image suite now runs on Docker and
Podman: workload capabilities, no_new_privs, credential readability,
and the workspace and /sandbox mount checks. The pinned image ID and
the workload/supervisor isolation checks stay, as does the Podman
driver suite unchanged.

Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com>

* refactor(oci): simplify workspace failure reporting and OCI image suite

Carry the Docker control supervisor's failure reason in a typed error
instead of matching status text, build the fixed workspace message where
the wait result is classified, and drop the fake Docker server test.

Inline image cleanup ordering in the suite, read the container engine
once, share sandbox naming, and stop granting a literal /sandbox in the
image identity policy. Add e2e:oci-image mise tasks and use them from the
ARM64 Docker workflow and TESTING.md.

Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com>

* test(oci): move shared container checks into the OCI image suite

Inspect the containers the driver created through the gateway's engine in
the shared suite: the workload runs the inspected image ID as the OCI
identity without a network or supervisor credential mounts, and the
supervisor is a separate non-root container. Keep only the Podman-specific
supervisor identity and capability checks in podman_oci_identity.

Signed-off-by: Matthew Grossman <mgrossman@nvidia.com>

* test(oci): check the workspace rejection reason from sandbox JSON

krishicks d1e8f44a06 feat(supervisor): export OTLP traces from sandbox supervisors (#3977)
When the gateway exports OTLP traces, compute drivers pass the gateway's
endpoint to supervisors as OPENSHELL_OTLP_ENDPOINT, along with TRACEPARENT
from the operation that launched them. The Kubernetes, Docker, Podman, and
VM drivers all receive the endpoint from the gateway; driver TOML cannot
set it. On Podman Machine, the Podman driver points a loopback endpoint
at host.containers.internal, since supervisor loopback is the VM's.
The supervisor exports spans as openshell-supervisor, tagged with
the sandbox ID, and flushes them before exiting.

supervisor.startup joins the sandbox's creation trace and covers image
policy discovery, policy load, and boundary attach, confirm, agent start,
and access start. Supervisor calls to the gateway carry W3C trace context,
so the gateway's server spans nest under them.

Each egress connection emits supervisor.egress.connect with authorize,
resolve, and dial children. These spans use DEBUG level because every
outbound connection starts its own trace. OpenShell spans export at INFO,
or at the sandbox log level when it is debug or trace; spans from other
libraries export at INFO.

Shiju f2901393e6 fix(supervisor): wait for repair when the gateway refuses a startup policy write (#3785)
* fix(supervisor): wait for repair when the gateway refuses a startup policy write

Startup writes the sandbox policy to the gateway in two cases: it
uploads a discovered image policy when the gateway has none, and it
writes the policy back after adding the proxy baseline filesystem paths.
When the gateway refused either write with FAILED_PRECONDITION or
INVALID_ARGUMENT, for example because the policy binds a provider that
is not attached, startup treated the refusal as a permanent error and
the supervisor exited. The sandbox never reached the ConfigurationInvalid
repair state that other startup rejections use.

Report such a refusal as a configuration rejection carrying the
gateway's message, log it once per write and error code, and keep
polling, so attaching the provider or replacing the policy completes
startup. Other error codes keep their current handling: transient codes
are retried, and permission, not-found and authentication failures
still end startup.

Skip the baseline-path write-back while a global policy is active. The
gateway refuses every sandbox policy write in that state, so startup
exited whenever a global policy lacked a baseline path. The supervisor
now adds the paths to its own copy of the policy without saving a
revision.

* test(supervisor): stabilize startup refusal log capture

Keep a second tracing dispatcher alive while capturing startup refusal
logs. With only one dispatcher, a parallel test thread without a default
subscriber can cache Interest::never for the shared OCSF callsite after
the capture thread rebuilds the cache.

repair assertions. Production startup behavior is unchanged.

krishicksandEvan Lezar a875add234 feat(server): write gateway OCSF events to JSONL (#3264)
* feat(server): write gateway OCSF events to JSONL

Previously, gateway security activity was available only in diagnostic output,
and events not associated with a sandbox, such as TLS certificate reloads, had
no independent structured record.

Now, configuring `openshell.gateway.ocsf_log` writes every gateway-produced
OCSF record to a bounded JSONL destination independently of `RUST_LOG`. The
destination supports daily or disabled rotation, retention limits, queue bounds,
and optional schema downgrade to OCSF 1.1 or 1.3.

Additionally, existing gateway emitters (TLS reloads, service routing, and
policy approval and auto-approval audits) emit structured events, so they reach
the JSONL destination, console shorthand, and the affected sandbox's log
stream. Records identify the gateway by its configured name in `device.uid` and
`device.name`, shared across replicas, with `device.hostname` identifying the
replica and `device.os` the gateway's operating system. Metrics and warnings
expose known best-effort losses.

* feat(kubernetes): support HA gateway rebalancing

Signed-off-by: Drew Newberry <anewberry@nvidia.com>

* perf(server): cache peer connections, tokens, and owner lookups

Every forwarded relay rebuilt its setup from scratch: an owner lookup, a
blocking read of the peer token, a TLS connect to the owning replica, and
a TokenReview plus Pod GET on the receiving side. Sandbox service routing
does this per HTTP request, so the apiserver calls scaled with traffic.

Cache all of it on ServerState:

- peer channels pooled per endpoint, so relays multiplex over one
  connection instead of redialing
- peer tokens keyed by SHA-256, expiring at min(ttl, token exp) so a hit
  cannot accept an expired token
- owner records for 3s against a 45s ownership TTL, still freshness
  checked before use

Entries are evicted when a relay fails. Also raise HTTP/2
max_concurrent_streams to 1024, since pooling funnels every relay between
two replicas onto one connection and hyper's default of 200 sits below
the 256 pending-relay budget.

Signed-off-by: divesh <dgude@nvidia.com>

* perf(server): pool upstream connections for sandbox services

Each HTTP request to a sandbox service opened its own supervisor relay,
paying a new TCP connection and HTTP/1 handshake every time. Worse, it
counted against the 32 in-flight relay cap, so a service handling more
than 32 concurrent requests failed outright.

Pool idle upstreams per endpoint and port, up to 8 each for 15s. Reuse is
safe because the pool only returns a connection hyper reports as ready,
and HTTP/1 cannot start a request until the previous body has drained.
Upgrades are never pooled since they take the connection over, and a
failed send evicts that endpoint. Pruning is bounded per key, with the
full sweep limited to once per 30s.

Signed-off-by: divesh <dgude@nvidia.com>

* fix(server): address HA gateway review findings (#3449)

- Let a gateway own supervisor sessions without a peer endpoint. Requiring
one whenever the store is PostgreSQL broke every single-instance
PostgreSQL deployment, because no sandbox supervisor could connect.
A cross-replica request to an owner that advertises no endpoint now fails
immediately naming the cause, instead of retrying until the wait timeout.
- Close a supervisor session on heartbeat only when another replica owns it,
or after renewals fail for the ownership TTL. A database error no longer
drops every session heartbeating during an outage.
- Clamp owner record ages at zero so a skewed or corrupt stored timestamp
  cannot produce a negative age.
- Bound the cross-object advisory lock with a lock timeout, so a stuck holder
fails instead of blocking every mutation in the fleet.
- Refuse to start when a peer endpoint is configured on a multi-replica
backend but peer authentication is unavailable, and warn when a
multi-replica backend has no peer endpoint at all.
- Reject a plaintext peer endpoint when the gateway serves TLS.
- Skip the sandbox watch poller on single-replica backends, where the local
update bus already sees every write.
- Rate-limit the peer owner cache sweep so an insert no longer scans the
  whole map under the lock.
- Retry GET and HEAD on a pooled upstream the sandbox closed, instead of
returning 502, and drop an emptied endpoint from the pool right away.
- Document the gateway peer environment variables and the post-rollout
  ownership skew operators should expect.

* fix(supervisor-network): reject null MCP matcher maps

Require explicit MCP params values to be maps before tool-alias
normalization. Cover YAML and JSON startup validation, rejected reload
retention, and valid omitted, empty, and explicit matcher maps.

Document the map contract for allow and deny rules.
